Through the generous donation of 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨 𝐏. 𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐉𝐫., University of Mindanao President and CEO, to the Research Innovation Center (RIC), the facility was subsequently established as the 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 (𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐋) through the initiative of the Balik Scientists under the Department of Science and Technology–Balik Scientist Program, with a mission to foster the advancement of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering.

Today, 𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐋 celebrates its 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲, marking two years since its official opening on 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒. As one of the Philippines’ pioneering laboratories dedicated to synthetic biology and metabolic engineering—and the sole laboratory of its kind in the Southern Philippines—UMBEL continues to push the boundaries of biology while serving as a hub for research, innovation, collaboration, and capacity-building in synthetic biology.

The University of Mindanao Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory (UMBEL) continues to advance the transformative potential of synthetic biology through scientific engagement, collaboration, and discussions.

As part of this continuing pursuit, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐁𝐚ñ𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 served as a 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫, alongside 𝐌𝐬. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐋𝐨𝐮 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫, at the 𝟓𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐒𝐌 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, held on July 15–17, 2026, at the De La Salle University Laguna Campus. With the theme “𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮: 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚,” the convention highlighted the essential role of microbiology in addressing emerging challenges and building a more sustainable future.

These engagements reflect UMBEL’s vision of harnessing the power of biology through metabolic engineering and synthetic biology to develop innovative solutions with meaningful applications in agriculture, environmental sustainability, and beyond.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐚ñ𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 also participated in the scientific discussions during the 𝟏𝟒𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐄𝐑𝐃 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 held at Vivere Hotel, Alabang, further contributing to the national science, technology, and innovation landscape.

The Hackathon Challenge 2026, held on July 18–19, 2026, brought together 14 teams from various universities and colleges within and outside Davao del Norte. Participants spent the first day immersed in intensive brainstorming and solution-building sessions at Lanikai, Hijo Resorts, Madaum, before presenting their circular-economy venture concepts on the final day at the Atrium, GMall of Tagum.

The competition challenged participants to create innovative solutions focused on circular economy principles, transforming waste into value, strengthening agricultural resilience, enhancing business adaptability, and promoting sustainable resource management. More than a competition, the event served as a platform for cultivating community-driven enterprises designed to create long-term economic and social impact.

This achievement reflects the dedication, ingenuity, and perseverance of our incubatees, as well as the University of Mindanao’s continuing commitment to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship that create meaningful solutions for society.

The Hackathon Challenge 2026 aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting innovation, sustainability, and collaborative partnerships. The competition particularly advances 𝐒𝐃𝐆 9: 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲, 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 by encouraging the development of innovative and technology-driven solutions to real-world challenges. It also supports 𝐒𝐃𝐆 12: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 by promoting circular economy principles that transform waste into valuable resources and foster sustainable production practices. Furthermore, the initiative contributes to 𝐒𝐃𝐆 8: 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 by cultivating entrepreneurship and empowering future innovators, 𝐒𝐃𝐆 13: 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 by inspiring environmentally responsible solutions that strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges, and 𝐒𝐃𝐆 17: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 by bringing together government agencies, academic institutions, technology business incubators, industry partners, and young innovators to collaboratively build sustainable and impactful enterprises.
