In collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the DOrSU Fabrication Laboratory introduced its current capabilities to MSMEs engaged in producing coconut-based craft products.

The activity provided a venue for exchanging ideas on how MSMEs can further improve their existing products and explore new product possibilities using coconut-derived materials, particularly coconut shells and husks. Through this engagement, DOrSU FabLab aims to support local producers in enhancing product design, innovation, and value-added production.

On March 24, 2026, the DOrSU Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab), in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), conducted an orientation and technology demonstration for selected Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in the woodwork sector. The activity was held at the University Research Complex (UResCom), Marfori Campus.

The activity introduced participating MSMEs to the FabLabโ€™s advanced equipment and fabrication capabilities, highlighting how digital fabrication technologies can support product improvement, innovation, and increased production efficiency. Through demonstrations and discussions, participants gained insights into how tools such as the CNC router and other digital fabrication machines can enhance precision, expand design possibilities, and improve overall product quality.

The event also served as a venue for knowledge exchange between FabLab personnel and local woodworking practitioners. Participants shared their current practices, production challenges, and ideas for improving creativity and efficiency in their products and services. Sample outputs produced using the laboratoryโ€™s equipment were presented to demonstrate the potential applications of digital fabrication technologies in the woodwork industry.

Through this initiative, DOrSU FabLab and DTI continue to strengthen collaboration with local MSMEs, supporting innovation, skills development, and technology adoption that can help improve competitiveness in the woodwork sector.

As part of their educational tour, BS Environmental Science students and faculty members from Surigao del Norte State University visited the Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) University Research Complex on March 18, 2026.

The delegates were introduced to the facilities and ongoing initiatives of the Research Complex. They were given a guided tour of its laboratories, including the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab). During the visit, the students were oriented on the available machines and equipment, as well as their potential applications in research, instruction, and innovation.

The Institute for Materials Innovation, Design, and Fabrication (iMIDF), also known as the DOrSU FabLab, participated in the Stakeholdersโ€™ Forum for the Review of the UResCom Manual of Operations held on March 6, 2026 at the UResCom Building in Marfori, City of Mati, Davao Oriental.

The forum was attended by UResCom personnel from its various institutes, led by UResCom Supervisor Dr. Wilanfranco C. Tayone, together with representatives from the academe, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and partner government agencies.

The purpose of the forum was to present the draft Manual of Operations and gather feedback from stakeholders regarding its provisions and implementation. The inputs and recommendations from the participants will be integrated into the final version of the manual.

During the forum, FabLab personnel led by Dr. Rod Ryan Mendoza and Dr. Ivan L. Saligumba also presented the proposed fee structure for the various services offered by the laboratory, including information on how clients may avail of these services.

Later in the afternoon, Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Director Priscilla R. Sonido, CESO III, visited the complex together with DOrSU President Dr. Roy G. Ponce.

After introducing MSMEs in the metal industry to advanced fabrication tools, the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) of Davao Oriental State University, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao Oriental, welcomed enterprises from the wearables and homestyle sector on August 11, 2025 for orientation and live demonstrations.

Held at the University Research Complex (UResCom) in Marfori, City of Mati, the session showcased the CNC router (ShopBot) and the laser cutter and engraver (AP Lazer) for high-accuracy cutting and engraving on a range of materials. Both machines, acquired through the Commission on Higher Educationโ€™s Institutional Development and Innovation Grant (CHED-IDIG) and DTIโ€™s Shared Service Facility (SSF) program, open new opportunities for product design, customization, and branding.

By giving MSMEs access to these technologies, DOrSU-FabLab aims to encourage creativity, strengthen product quality, and expand market potential.

On June 5, 2025, the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) of Davao Oriental State University, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao Oriental, hosted an orientation and demonstration for selected Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the metal industry.

Held at the University Research Complex (UResCom) in Marfori, City of Mati, Davao Oriental, the activity introduced participants to FabLabโ€™s range of machines and equipment, with special emphasis on metalworking using the CNC milling machine and plasma cutter. The machines and equipment were acquired through the Commission on Higher Educationโ€™s Institutional Development and Innovation Grant (CHED-IDIG) and DTIโ€™s Shared Service Facility (SSF) program.

The event marks an early milestone for DOrSU-FabLab as it continues to establish itself as a hub for innovation. In the coming months, it aims to cater to more clients, offering services that promote product development and service enhancement through its state-of-the-art facilities.
