In recognition of his unwavering support and invaluable contributions to environmental protection, Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) President Dr. Roy G. Ponce has been honored with the Outstanding Stakeholder Award by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XI.
โ
The recognition was conferred during the Outstanding Stakeholder Awards Ceremony held today, June 27, at the DENR Regional Office XI Conference Room in Davao City. Representing Dr. Ponce at the event was Ms. Amy G. Ponce, who received the award on his behalf.
โ
The award is bestowed upon distinguished partners who have demonstrated exceptional commitment in advancing the DENRโs vision of ๐ข ๐ฏ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ซ๐ฐ๐บ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ด๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ข๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ช๐ต๐ด ๐ฏ๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ข๐ญ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด๐ฐ๐ถ๐ณ๐ค๐ฆ๐ด ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ข ๐ค๐ญ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฏ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ต๐ฉ๐บ ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ท๐ช๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต.
โ
Under Dr. Ponceโs leadership, DOrSU has remained to be an active partner of the DENR in advancing environmental initiatives. The Universityโs strong engagement in research, community extension, and environmental education has significantly contributed to the success of national and local conservation programs. Through various interdisciplinary projects, DOrSU has helped raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and empower communities to become active stewards of their environment.
โ
Beyond his institutional role, Dr. Ponce is also known for his grassroots environmental advocacies. Among the most notable initiatives he conceptualized is the Plastic Education and Exchange Program, which he launched in Barangay Taganilao, City of Mati. The program engages local children in collecting plastic litter along shorelines, which they exchange for school supplies and essential goods. To deepen impact, it includes micro-lectures on plastic pollution and environmental responsibility, conducted with the help of community volunteers.
โ
This simple yet powerful approach has inspired behavioral change at the local level and has been replicated in other areas of Davao Oriental, with support from both local governments and civil society groups. The initiative continues to mobilize volunteers and serves as a model for sustainable, inclusive environmental action.
โ
Joining Dr. Ponce among this yearโs awardees are the City Government of Mati, EnP Joseph G. Porgatorio, and several other partners who have made notable contributions to the DENRโs programs and objectives.
โ
The recognition reaffirms Dr. Ponceโs enduring commitment to environmental stewardship and DOrSUโs ongoing efforts in advancing its regenerative futures vision.
