DA RFO XI - Davao Commercial Agriculture Research Station

During the celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolks Month- the Davao Commercial Agriculture Research Station (DaCARS) actively participated in the event held at the Davao Region Central Experiment Station (DARCES) in Manambulan, Tugbok District, Davao City. The station highlighted its innovative and sustainable agricultural technologies, including greenhouse honeydew production, PGR on upland rice, soybean production, and mushroom cultivation. In addition to the technology showcase, the station also distributed planting materials such as pomelo and calamansi seedlings, vermicast, and vegetable seeds to support local farmers and fisherfolks in enhancing their productivity and livelihoods.

Gearing toward sustainable upland rice production, the Davao Commercial Agriculture Research Station (DaCARS), in partnership with the Provincial Agriculture Office of Davao Oriental and the Municipal Agriculture Office of Cateel, successfully conducted a two-day training for upland farmers.

A total of 25 farmers actively participated in the activity, gaining practical knowledge and skills on sustainable upland rice production. The sessions covered essential topics such as proper land preparation, crop establishment, fertilization, seed selection and storage to ensure better yields and seed quality.

Participants also enhanced their understanding of the importance of correctly identifying weeds, insect pests—including rodents—and diseases, within the framework of Area-wide Management Strategies, which aim to improve coordinated and effective farming practices over a broader area.
In response to the rising costs of commercial fertilizers and pesticides, farmers were provided hands-on training in the preparation of organic and cost-effective alternatives, including Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN), Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ), and Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ). These inputs promote safer, environmentally friendly farming practices while helping reduce production costs.

At the end of the two-day training, all farmers were awarded certificates of participation in recognition of their successful completion.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗗𝗮𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗦) recently welcomed 27 Grade 12 students from Taguibo Vocational Agricultural High School in Mati City, Davao Oriental, who are enrolled in the TechVoc Program. The students were oriented on the station’s Research for Development (R4D) initiatives and its various production activities, providing them with valuable insights into modern agricultural practices. Following the briefing, the students were given a guided tour of the station, where they engaged in hands-on training on asexual propagation, enhancing their practical skills and technical knowledge. They also visited the DaCARS Livestock Project, which features upgraded goats and native chickens, allowing them to observe advancements in animal production and management. Through initiatives like this, DaCARS continues to inspire and empower young, innovative learners, fostering the next generation of agricultural leaders committed to uplifting and transforming the agricultural sector in the Province of Davao Oriental.

Starting the year fresh, sweet, and healthy 🍈✨ The Davao Commercial Agriculture Research Station successfully conducted a Sensory Evaluation of Honeydew at the City Agriculture Office of Mati. This activity aimed to identify consumer preferences regarding honeydew. This activity is part of the ongoing study on the “Marketing Assessment of Honeydew in Davao.”
Through this initiative, we continue to support research-driven strategies that strengthen agricultural marketing and promote healthy, locally grown produce. 💚🌱

Delivery of fertilizers and monitoring of upland rice to Farmer Cooperators in Cateel, Davao Oriental, under the project “𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗫𝗜” under the DA-RFO XI Rice Program. A total of 50 bags of urea and complete fertilizer were distributed to the project's beneficiaries. The delivery was timed with their first fertilizer application, which occurs 30-40 days after sowing.

The Davao Commercial Agriculture Research Station (DaCARS), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office XI’s High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), successfully conducted the distribution of 500 pummelo and 400 calamansi seedlings to the beneficiaries from the Barangay Mabuhay Farmers Association in Mabuhay, Carmen, Davao del Norte.

This initiative forms part of the ongoing efforts to revitalize and strengthen the Davao Pummelo Industry, recognized as one of the region’s flagship high-value crops. By providing quality planting materials, the project aims to enhance local production, improve farmers’ income, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Moreover, the program underscores the Department of Agriculture’s commitment to empowering rural communities through capacity building and livelihood diversification. Ultimately, this endeavor contributes to fostering a greener, more resilient, and inclusive agricultural sector in Davao Region.
