‎The Science Month Competitions took place at the 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐒 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, bringing students together to showcase their knowledge, skills, creativity, and teamwork through a variety of exciting events, including the 𝐌𝐋𝐁𝐁 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐑𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐤’𝐬 𝐂𝐮𝐛𝐞, 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐁𝐞𝐞, 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, and 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠.

On September 16, 2026, the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences came together for its General Assembly 2026, bringing students, leaders, and organizations under one shared space of connection, information, and purpose.
Among the organizations featured during the gathering was Scientia Naturalis Societa (SNS), a community that embodies the spirit of curiosity, scientific discovery, and appreciation for the natural world. 🌿🔬

The General Assembly served as more than a gathering of students; it became an avenue for introducing organizational identities, strengthening connections, and reminding every FALS student that there are communities where their interests, talents, and aspirations can grow.

For SNS, the moment was an opportunity to step into the wider FALS community and showcase what it means to be driven by science, nature, and discovery. It was a glimpse into a community where questions become curiosity, curiosity becomes learning, and learning becomes a deeper understanding of the world around us.

As the assembly unfolded, one message stood clear: when students come together, ideas find a place to grow.

And for SNS, this is only the beginning. 🌱✨

‎Long before we understood the microscopic world, life existed beyond what the naked eye could see.

‎In the 17th century, Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek used self-made microscopes to observe tiny organisms, which he called “animalcules.” His discoveries opened a window into the hidden world of microorganisms.

‎Today, International Microorganism Day reminds us that these tiny forms of life play important roles in ecosystems, food, medicine, and human health. 🌱🧫

‎𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪? Algae are not true plants but protists.
‎
‎Despite being plant-like, algae are actually a group of microscopic organisms that thrive in an aquatic and saturated environment. Algae are also photosynthetic organisms since they are autotrophs, which makes them a great contributor of oxygen; in fact, over half of Earth's oxygen is being produced by algae. Not only that, they are also responsible for the foundation of the aquatic food webs, massive absorption of carbon dioxide, and large algae act as an underwater forest that shelters and protects marine species.

‎However, regardless of being known for rapid overgrowth, certain types of algae like charophytes (stoneworts) and marine macroalgae (seaweeds) are facing the risk of being endangered due to climate change, ocean acidification, coastal development, water pollution, and invasive species that threatens the native algal populations. But because of the lack of formal conservation assessments, it's true risk levels are often overlooked.

‎Protecting algae means protecting marine life, a step in conserving our ecosystem.

Did you know? The 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥 (𝑺𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒑𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒔) is a rare bird found nowhere else in the world but the Philippines—particularly on the islands of Samar, Leyte, and Bohol. 🇵🇭✨️

Recognized by its pale blue bill, bright blue eye-wattle, black face, and reddish-brown body, this beautiful bird inhabits the understory of lowland forests. It usually occurs alone or in pairs and feeds on small insects and other forest invertebrates.

But behind its striking appearance is a serious conservation concern. The Visayan broadbill is classified as Vulnerable (VU) , with forest loss and habitat disturbance among the major threats to its survival.

Every forest protected helps provide a safer home for this rare endemic species. Protecting the Visayan broadbill means protecting the unique forests and biodiversity of the Visayan islands. 🌿🐦

Did you know? The world's largest flower has no roots, no stems, no leaves, and can't photosynthesize.

Meet the rafflesia—a truly fascinating and intriguing plant, holding the recognition as the world's largest flower however, that is the least interesting fact about rafflesia. First of all, it has no roots, stems, and even leaves which means it isn't capable of conducting the process of photosynthesis since it lacks chlorophyll. But how do they survive if it can't photosynthesize? Well, rafflesia is a parasitic plant that completely lives within its host vine (Tetrastigma). At first, the rafflesia stays hidden as a tiny thread-like cell that grows directly inside the woody vines of its host, absorbing the host's nutrients and water until it blooms.

Second of all, when it blooms, it uses a deceptive trap by emitting an overwhelming smell of decomposed meat and flesh to attract carrion insects—mostly flies, for pollination. Furthermore, rafflesia is endemic to Southeast Asia meaning it cannot be found anywhere else in the world except in Southeast Asian countries like Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Brunei.

Additionally, rafflesia has many ecological importance. It helps the tropical rainforest ecosystem by feeding carrion insects, supporting the food web, being an indicator of an undisturbed habitat, and by attracting tourists and nature lovers it protects the ecosystem through ecotourism.

Though, rafflesia is a critically endangered species due to habitat loss from deforestation, highly fragile and complicated reproductive biology, human interferences, and the inability to grow outside the wild. We have to put in our minds that once they become extinct, we will never have such magnificent species in our lifetime again. So, to prevent them from being wiped out, we have to be aware of what's happening in our environment and ecosystem, and let's do whatever we can to protect it.

Did you know? The Philippine Flying Lemur, also known as the Philippine Colugo, is found only in the Philippines! 🇵🇭✨️
Despite its name, this amazing animal is not actually a lemur—and it cannot truly fly! Instead, it has a large membrane of skin that stretches between its limbs, allowing it to glide gracefully from one tree to another.
The Philippine Colugo is specially adapted for life in the forest. It spends most of its time high in the trees and is mostly active at night. Its ability to glide helps it move through the forest while avoiding the dangers of staying on the ground.
One of its most interesting features is that its gliding membrane also helps protect and carry its young while moving through the trees!
