On the afternoon of May 20, 1900, Major Bonifacio Serrano arrived in Palanog, Masbate's capital, and surrendered his men, who formed a parade in the public plaza. Major Serrano immediately handed Colonel Hardin his sword and ordered his troops to lay down their weapons, and the Americans treated them with the utmost respect.

Those who surrendered with Major Serrano were one hundred ninety-six privates, ten officers, and four civil officers, not including the town presidents of Masbate and Governor Vicente Trivinio. They surrender forty-one Re*****on, thirty-eight Ma**er, and fifteen Amberg rifles, all in good condition and a considerable quantity of ammunition. All those who surrendered were pardoned and given two days of rice, as they remained in the town as prisoners of war and had no means of subsistence.

Governor Vicete Trivinio was temporarily permitted to continue to oversee the island's government activities, as did Masbate's town presidents in their respective towns.

In the history of Masbate, it was never only leaders, settlers, or public figures who shaped our province. Behind every chapter were mothersโ€”quietly steady, deeply influential, and always present.

From the early communities of Masbate, mothers carried much of the weight of daily life. While many worked in the fields, went out to sea, or engaged in trade, it was the mothers who held the home together, raised the children, and kept traditions alive.

They were the first teachersโ€”passing on language, values, faith, and stories that connected each generation to the next. Through their voices, children learned not only how to live, but also where they came from.

Even the history of Masbate is shaped by them in ways that are often not written downโ€”through family life, community memory, and the quiet preservation of culture.

Today, we remember and honor all mothers of Masbateโ€”those who are with us now, and those who came before us and continue to live on in the legacy they left behind.

Every Masbateรฑo carries a story that begins with a mother.

๐Ÿ’ Happy Motherโ€™s Day to all the mothers of Masbateโ€”past and present. ๐Ÿ’

Following renewed global interest in unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) after the release and declassification of several UFO-related files and investigations in the United States during the Trump administration, many older reports of unexplained sightings around the world have been revisited and re-examined. Among these resurfacing accounts are earlier Philippine reports that include sightings in provinces such as Masbate.

Long before the modern discussions on UAPs, Masbate was already mentioned in connection with unusual aerial phenomena during the late 1970s.

On the night of April 9, 1979, residents of San Pascual and nearby areas in Masbate reportedly witnessed strange lights moving across the sky. The objects were described as glowing in different colorsโ€”blue, red, green, and whiteโ€”and appearing to hover and shift in ways that did not resemble ordinary aircraft of the time.

The account was later mentioned alongside other reports from different parts of the Philippines during the same year, suggesting that similar sightings were being observed across multiple provinces.

Another account dated April 24, 1979, also referenced sightings in several areas, including Bohol, Masbate, Zamboanga, and Negros Oriental, adding to the broader pattern of unusual aerial phenomena reported during that period.

What exactly was seen remains uncertain. Explanations range from natural atmospheric events and misidentified aircraft to interpretations that continue to fuel curiosity and debate.

More than four decades later, the 1979 Masbate sighting remains one of those quiet local accountsโ€”preserved in records, occasionally revisited, and still open to interpretation.

Not many people talk about this date in Masbateโ€™s history.

After the Pulahanes, led by Pedro Kipte, pushed back Spanish forces in August 1898, Masbate had a brief moment of freedom under the First Philippine Republic. For a while, it felt like independence was finally ours.

But it didnโ€™t last.

On this day in 1900, American forces arrived and took control of Masbate. Just like that, another chapter of foreign rule began.

Same land. Same people. Another struggle.

History like this is easy to forgetโ€”but it shaped who we are today.

What do you thinkโ€”should this be remembered more?

May is National Heritage Month.

This is our time to pause and listen to the stories woven into our identity. Stories of ancestors who built with their hands, traditions that have shaped us, places that hold our memories. Stories of youth who carry these forward with hope and imagination.

This May, we invite you to become part of these narratives. Visit a heritage site. Learn a traditional craft. Listen to an elder's story. Support a young artist. Celebrate with your community. Together with NCCA, we invite you to practice all these with us!

In every act, you honor where we come from and help build where we are going.

Our heritage is not something to preserve behind glass. It is alive in our hands, our hearts, our choices. It grows when we tend to it together.

Roots and Horizons. Shared Heritage. Our Collective Future.

Join us this May because OUR story matters.

Here is the Official Poster for National Heritage Month 2026 bearing the theme โ€œRoots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Futureโ€

At the heart of this yearโ€™s visual is the banigโ€”a symbol of connection, continuity, and community. Just as each strand is carefully woven, our heritage is shaped by the many stories, traditions, and identities that bind us as Filipinos across generations.

Surrounding it are diverse communities, reminding us that heritage belongs to all of usโ€”lived, practiced, and passed on in everyday life. The rising sun speaks of hope, while the vibrant colors reflect the richness and dynamism of our cultural expressions.

As we celebrate National Heritage Month this May, we are invited not only to look back with pride, but to take part in carrying our heritage forward. It is not confined to the pastโ€”it is a living legacy, sustained by collective care and shared responsibility.

Together, let us honor our roots and shape our collective future.
