and students (ages 13 and above). Akmiah Center has designed targeted programs that address the proficiency needs of its students in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. The Center makes use of practical exercises and activities that enable students to use the language effectively when placed in actual situations. The Center offers the following programs:
1. Public Speaking
One of the greatest fears of most people is speaking in public. A lot of people are uncomfortable speaking their mind and expressing their thoughts before a number of people. The reality is, it only takes practice and proper technique to deliver a speech effectively. This eight-session 2-hour program aims to develop confidence in the speaker by providing various exercises, strategies, and techniques that will help develop effective public speaking.
2. Conversational English (Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation)
Professionals, students, OFWs and foreign nationals can develop their confidence in speaking by learning and reviewing grammatical rules and principles. Those who would like to get used to the natural way of speaking with English speakers will find the exercises helpful. Oftentimes, correct grammar might not be enough to effectively express ideas because appropriate vocabulary and correct pronunciation get in the way in making one's thoughts understood. This 30- session (three levels), two-hour class aims to develop precision and accuracy in grammar, sentence construction, vocabulary, and pronunciation while taking into account the context where the language is used.
3. Business Communication
The ability to articulate thoughts concisely and effectively while considering the right format in writing business documents is challenging for some. In businesses where precision is important, the ability to correctly address a concern while observing tact is of paramount importance. This six-session 2-hour class provides a review of grammatical rules, sentence construction, structure and format, and practices business people must know to be able to write clear and effective business documents.
4. Grammar and Essay Writing
In this program, grammar exercises, together with reading and writing activities, enhance the students’ understanding and appropriate use of grammatical principles when writing sentences and paragraphs. Oftentimes, students are unable to express their thoughts correctly due to lack of coherence and proper essay structure. This eight-session 2-hour class aims to develop the student’s mastery of proper thought development via written communication.
5. Academic Writing
College-level students need to master the art of Academic Writing principles when writing essays, especially research papers. This eight-session 2-hour class aims to equip the students with a firm foundation in writing academic papers with the use of APA (American Psychological Association) format.
6. English as a Second Language (ESL)
This program aims to help foreigners learn the rules and correct usage of the English language to effectively communicate their thoughts. The ESL program is divided into four levels: Beginner, Upper Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each level consists of ten 2-hour sessions filled with real-life practical conversation, listening and speaking exercises that will aid in the development of the student’s communication skills. Course Design:
Number of sessions: 8-10 sessions per proficiency level
Number of hours per session: 2 hours per session
Number of levels: 2-4 levels (depending on the program)
