Filipino at Ingles ang itinuturing na pangunahing wika sa Pilipinas, ngunit bakit tila mas napababayaan ang wika ng bayang sinilangan?

Sa kasalukuyang panahon, unti-unting nababawasan ang paggamit ng wikang Filipino dahil sa laganap na pananaw na ang ibang wika ay tanda ng talino at mataas na katayuan, na lalo pang pinatitibay ng pagprayoridad sa nilalamang Ingles (Guiang, 2018). Dahil dito, natatabunan ang Filipino ng mga banyagang wika sa pamamagitan ng language diffusion, kung saan nangingibabaw ang mga dominanteng kultura tulad ng Ingles bilang lingua franca.

Ang madalang na paggamit ng sariling wika ng mga kabataang Filipino online ay nagdudulot ng mababang literacy rate dahil nakasasanayan ang maling pagbaybay at paggamit ng mga salita (Esteron, 2020). Samakatuwid, humihina ang pagkakakilanlan sa kultura at hindi naipagmamalaki ang wikang pambansa.

Noong Agosto 30, matagumpay na nilagdaan ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) at West Visayas State University (WVSU) ang Memorandum ng Unawaan (MOU) para sa pagtatatag ng Sentro ng Wika at Kultura at pagpapatibay ng paggamit ng wikang Filipino sa lahat ng plataporma, online man o harapang usapan.

Ang Tanggol Wika ay samahan ng mga g**o, estudyante, at mamamayang namuno sa mga petisyon at kilos-protesta Korte Suprema upang ipakita ang kahalagahan ng wikang pambansa sa edukasyon. Ngunit, naglabas ng desisyon ang Korte Suprema noong 2019 na nagsasabing legal at balido ang pagpapatupad ng CMO No. 20, s. 2013, na nag-aalis sa Filipino at Panitikan bilang core subjects sa kolehiyo.

Itigil na ang pagtingin sa Filipino bilang wikang para sa kaswal na usapan. Hindi lamang Ingles ang makabubuo sa pagkatao’t magbibigay oportunidad sa atin sapagkat ang wikang Filipino’y simbolo ng pagkakakilanlan at kalayaan.
