This Labor Day, we honor the quiet, everyday heroism of those who carry the dual burdens of education and livelihood—recognizing that the most demanding journeys often yield the most profound growth.

Meet Skud Guillermo, an Electronics Engineering student at Marikina Polytechnic College (MPC) whose journey redefines what it means to succeed in the face of adversity. Balancing a demanding role in the outsourcing industry with his studies, Skud initially struggled with self-doubt, measuring his worth by comparing the pace of others.

As the eldest of four siblings, he drew his perseverance from his mother—a single parent, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) for nearly a decade, and a cancer survivor. Witnessing her resilience taught him that life is not a race, but a harvest.
Over time, Skud reframed his difficult path not as a setback, but as the forge that built his strength. That very resilience enabled him to represent MPC in an International Learning Express with Singapore Polytechnic and became a National Champion in a literary competition alongside top universities in the country. Skud’s story is a reminder that being "on time" is merely a social construct, but being ready when tested is a reality.

Through the late-night bus rides between his shifts and his lectures, he discovered a quiet strength—proof that the most rewarding destinations belong to those brave enough to take the long road.
