On September 4, 2026, setting the tone for safety of the University community, and underscoring the awareness of all stakeholders, the Basic Education students of WU-P Aurora actively participated in the Active Shooting Drill as part of the Universityโ€™s continuing efforts to strengthen preparedness, emergency response, and campus safety. The activity was initiated and facilitated by the Disaster and Emergency Response System (DERS) of WU-P chaired by the School Administrator, Dr. Ferdinand Romano, in coordination with concerned government agencies and local stakeholders. The drill, headed by DERS focal person, retired PGen. Raul Siriban, and assisted by Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Coordinator, Engr. Mitchluke Sarmiento, and all members of the DERS โ€“ Prof. Melvin Hugo, Mr. Neil Francis Tan, Mr. Richard Gotis, Mr. Harold Mijares, Ms. Mary Joy Gutierrez, Mr. Harvin Ancheta and Ms. Cheyserr Namoro โ€“ was designed to enhance the awareness, preparedness, and response capabilities of the school community in the event of an active shooting or similar security-related emergency.

The activity was also actively participated in by personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Maria Aurora, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Maria Aurora, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Municipal Local Government Operations Office (MLGOO), and Barangay Officials. Their participation provided the school community with practical guidance and actual response interventions that emphasized proper coordination, communication, evacuation, securing of affected areas, and the protection and accounting of students and personnel during an emergency situation. School officials likewise took an active role in directing the implementation of the established emergency procedures and ensuring the orderly participation of the school community.

The drill was joined by all teachers, faculty, staff and visitors at the time of the drill, demonstrating the collective commitment of the University to maintaining a safe and prepared learning environment. Through the simulation, participants were given an opportunity to apply appropriate emergency protocols, identify possible gaps in existing procedures, and strengthen their ability to respond calmly and effectively under pressure. The activity also reinforced the importance of preparedness, teamwork, discipline, and inter-agency coordination in mitigating the possible effects of an active shooting incident.
Overall, the drill served as a significant component of the Universityโ€™s disaster and emergency preparedness program. It strengthened the partnership between WU-P and the different government and community stakeholders while providing valuable practical experience to the school community. The successful conduct of the activity underscores the Universityโ€™s continuing commitment to safeguarding the lives and welfare of its students, teachers, faculty, staff, and other members of the academic community.

A post-event evaluation was done to know the effectiveness of the drill and determine the possible reinforcement and measures to be implemented should there be another drill of the same nature shall be done, whether at WU-P or at another institution.

Wesleyan University-Philippines, Aurora Campus, continues to strengthen its commitment to gender-responsive governance and institutional development through knowledge-sharing and strategic partnerships. With this, Mr. Harold R. Mijares, Coordinator of the Gender and Development (GAD) Office of WU-P Aurora visited Mount Carmel College-Baler, Inc. on September 1, 2026 to initiate discussions on a possible benchmarking activity focusing on GAD programs, policies, and best practices.

Mr. Mijares had a productive conversation with Mrs. Maria Socorro C. Novicio, Human Resource Development Officer (HRDO), and Sr. Victoria Chriseley D. Lao, GAD Coordinator, where both institutions exchanged insights on their respective GAD programs, activities, advocacy initiatives, and approaches to promoting gender equality, inclusivity, and a safe and respectful educational environment.

The proposed benchmarking activity aims to provide both institutions with an avenue to share effective practices, identify innovative approaches, and strengthen their respective GAD programs and institutional policies. It will also serve as a foundation for future collaboration through joint seminars, capacity-building activities, advocacy programs, and other GAD-related initiatives.

The initiative reflects the shared commitment of WUP Aurora and Mount Carmel College to continuous institutional improvement and the meaningful integration of Gender and Development principles in the academic community. Through collaboration and mutual learning, both institutions look forward to strengthening their GAD efforts and contributing to a more inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive educational environment

The Philippine Association for Graduate Education Philippines, Inc. (PAGE) held its 57th International Convention and General Assembly on August 27โ€“29, 2026, at the Lyceum of the Philippines University โ€“ Cavite with the theme "Graduate Education as Catalyst for ASEAN Integration: Advancing Regional Excellence through Collaboration, Innovation, and Quality Assurance." The three-day gathering brought together graduate school administrators, faculty, and researchers from across the country to examine how Philippine graduate education can align with ASEAN qualifications frameworks, quality assurance systems, and student and faculty mobility programs amid deepening regional integration.

The convention focused on ASEAN integration, quality assurance, and the role of artificial intelligence in graduate education. Key speakers from CHED, ASEAN institutions, and higher education organizations discussed: (1) Quality assurance and ASEAN higher education integration, (2) Philippine Qualifications Framework and graduate program development, (3) AI use in research and academic integrity, (4) Lifelong learning and flexible graduate education pathways, (5) ASEAN student and faculty mobility and (6) Sustainability and development of graduate education programs. Part of the plenary sessions and workshop during the convention was featuring the formal signing of PAGE partner MOUs/MOAs, the launch of the PAGE website, parallel paper presentations across four tracks, Regional Program Development and Curriculum Innovation, AI Applications in Graduate Education and Research, Quality Assurance Practices and Institutional Readiness, and Internationalization Strategies and Mobility Programs and the election and induction of the new PAGE National Board of Directors for 2026โ€“2029.

Wesleyan University โ€“ Philippines was represented at the convention by Dr. Ferdinand E. Romano, School Administrator and Graduate School Coordinator; Dr. Marlon M. Sumait, Dean, College of Computer Studies and Graduate School Coordinator; and Dr. John Mark F. Bondoc, Dean, Graduate School, together with other Graduate School faculty from Cushman Campus in Cabanatuan City. Following the prescribed dress code for each day of the convention, barong or Filipiniana with black pants on Day 1, corporate attire on Day 2, and Graduate School uniform on Day 3, WU-P delegation joined fellow graduate education leaders from across the Philippines and the ASEAN region in charting the future direction of graduate education in the region.

The 57th PAGE International Convention and General Assembly once again underscored the association's role as a leading venue for benchmarking Philippine graduate education against regional and international standards, particularly as institutions navigate the demands of ASEAN integration, quality assurance, and the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in research and instruction. The convention's discussions on quality assurance frameworks, AI-enabled research, and cross-border mobility offered timely insights that will help guide the continuing enhancement of graduate programs. Through its active participation, Wesleyan University โ€“ Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining strong ties with PAGE and to positioning its Graduate School for meaningful engagement within the evolving ASEAN academic community.
