ORIENTED, CONNECTED, AND READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

On September 19, 2026, the Department of Community Development recently held its Department Orientation and Acquaintance Party, bringing students and faculty together for a meaningful day of learning, connection, and fun!

The orientation served as an avenue for students to learn more about the history and journey of the Department, its Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives (VMGO), as well as the rules and policies that guide students in their academic journey. Students were also introduced to the faculty force of the Department who will be with them throughout their learning experience.

A significant part of the activity was the Induction and Turn-Over of Key Responsibilities to the newly elected student officers, symbolizing a new chapter of student leadership, service, and responsibility. May this new set of leaders continue to uphold the values of the Department and represent the student body with commitment and integrity.

But of course, an orientation wouldn't be complete without getting to know one another! The Acquaintance Party gave students the opportunity to mingle, build friendships, and create new memories with their fellow Community Development students.

And with the fun theme “You Went to the Wrong Event!” 👗🕺🎭, students were encouraged to come dressed as if they had accidentally walked into an entirely different event. From unexpected outfits to creative interpretations, the activity proved that Community Development students know how to learn, connect, and have fun!

From knowing our roots, understanding our responsibilities, welcoming new leaders, to building new friendships, the activity truly reflected the spirit of a growing and united Community Development family.

As the College of Public Affairs (CPA) celebrates its 65th Founding Anniversary, and as Mindanao State University marks its 65th year of excellence and service this September, the Department of Community Development is one with this historic celebration.

The Department likewise commemorates 65 years of Community Development education and service, tracing its roots to the early years of MSU when the Bachelor of Science in Community Development was established as one of the pioneering programs of the University.

For six and a half decades, the Department has remained committed to its mission of empowering communities, developing responsive community practitioners, and advancing inclusive and sustainable development. Through generations of students, educators, and community partners, Community Development has continued to be a bridge between knowledge and action, the academe and the community, and aspirations and meaningful change.

As we celebrate 65 years of heritage, service, and transformative education, we honor the people who built the foundation of the Department and look forward to a future where Community Development continues to create empowered, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.

"From an Unknown Program to Indispensable Calling"

The Department of Community Development was deeply honored by the inspiring tribute message delivered by Dr. Marian Myrtle G. Onod during the Recognition Rites and Tribute to Parents of Batch Rinayag 2026.

Dr. Onod reflected on the humble beginnings of the program, when many questioned its relevance, and celebrated how perseverance, dedicated mentors, and passionate graduates transformed it into a respected profession.

Subsequently, she emphasized that Sustainable Community Development is far more than a profession—it is a lifelong calling dedicated to empowering people, transforming lives, and fostering resilient and inclusive communities. She reminded the graduates that genuine development is measured not by infrastructure or completed projects alone, but by strengthened families, restored hope, and communities united through compassion, integrity, and perseverance.

Dr. Onod also underscored the continuing relevance of community development in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. While technology can enhance efficiency and provide valuable tools, she emphasized that it can never replace the uniquely human qualities of empathy, moral judgment, trust-building, and servant leadership. She challenged the graduates to embrace technological advancements responsibly while remaining steadfast in their commitment to human dignity, participatory development, and sustainable change. Her message further highlighted that the future of community development lies in building institutions that inspire trust, nurturing leaders who serve with integrity, and empowering communities to become active partners in their own development.

As she reflected on the remarkable journey of the Department of Community Development, Dr. Onod expressed her pride in witnessing former students become faculty members, academic leaders, and mentors to a new generation of community development practitioners. She reminded the graduates that the greatest legacy of an educator is found not in titles or achievements, but in the lives of those who continue the mission of service.

As the graduates of Batch Rinayag 2026 embark on a new chapter, may they carry forward the values of compassion, humility, resilience, and excellence, becoming catalysts for sustainable development and positive transformation in the communities they are called to serve.
