🕊️ Nurturing Peace Within: GEC Students Challenged to be the Next 'Third Siders

Students from Dr. Khayronesah Abbas’s GEC105 (Life and Works of Rizal) and GEC109 (Readings in Philippine History) classes recently attended an inspiring lecture titled, "Peace Within: The Third Sider — The Role of Students in Peacebuilding." The impactful session bridged the lessons of Philippine history with the modern call for personal and communal harmony.

The session featured Ma'am Rahana Jhan Ganda-Pacasum (Chief of Peacebuilding & Conflict Resolution, NCMF), who drew powerful parallels between historical conflicts and modern societal divisions. She challenged students to look beyond superficial disagreements, emphasizing that true peace is about respect amidst differences. Connecting the literary masterpieces of Dr. Jose Rizal and Philippine history to contemporary times, the lecture inspired students to become modern "Third Siders"—voices of reason, empathy, and reconciliation.

Like Rizal, who used intellect over violence, today's students are called to be active peacebuilders in an increasingly polarized world.

This successful seminar was made possible through the leadership of School Superintendent Madame Hja. Cairany Dia Gandamra and Dean of Instruction Ma'am Malano Tingaraan. The event also highlighted a strong institutional partnership between the NCMF Lanao del Sur (represented by Doc. Anisah Mapupuno Laguindab) and the MSU-IPDM (represented by Dr. Aliah P. Cali-Pascan).

MSU-IPDM Marawi and GenSan Launch Digital Inquirer Kit to Combat Online Gender-Based Violence

MARAWI CITY — The Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) of Mindanao State University–Marawi, in coordination with the IPDM Mindanao State University–General Santos Campus (MSU-GSC), officially marked a major milestone in digital learning and social transformation with the formal Launching and User Walkthrough of the "Digital Inquiry on Online-Based Gendered Violence."

Organized in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, this landmark gathering brought together MSU faculty members, Fundamentals of Peace Education (FPE 101) educators, Gender and Development (GAD) focal persons, institutional heads of units, and various community stakeholders.

More than just an interactive educational resource, this innovative initiative serves as a vital, collective mechanism to address the rising prevalence and harmful impacts of online gender-based violence across families and communities. By seamlessly integrating human rights, gender equality, and responsible digital citizenship into modern teaching and learning spaces, MSU-IPDM aims to foster critical thinking and meaningful dialogue across the university system.
Ultimately, the initiative seeks to empower educators and learners alike to become active agents of positive change—cultivating safer online environments while fortifying the foundations of lasting peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development throughout the Bangsamoro region and broader Mindanao.

The success of the launch was made possible through the robust collaboration of various internal and external stakeholders. Special thanks are extended to Prof. Melba Angni, the MSU-GFPS GAD Focal Officer, alongside the MSU Center for Women’s Studies, the MSU Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MSU-DRRMO), and the MSU University Library.

Deep appreciation is also given to the participating collegiate bodies and academic leaders who championed the event:

College of King Faisal Center for Islamic, Arabic, and Asian Studies (KFCIAAS) under the leadership of Dean Atty. Jashim Abdulrahman; College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) under the leadership of Dean Monaimah Gubat Manabilang; MSU Senior High School (MSU-SHS) under the direction of Director Rohanie M. Sultan; MSU Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OAVCAA) under the leadership of Dr. Samsia M. Paitao-Dumrang.

Heartfelt recognition is likewise extended to the MSU Lanao National College of Arts and Trades (MSU-LNCAT) under the leadership of Superintendent Hja. Cairany Dia Gandamra, and the MSU University Training Center (MSU-UTC) led by Dr. Edenairah P. Esmail.

A resounding congratulations goes out to the core visionaries behind this successful peace action resource: Dr. Acram A. Latiph, Executive Director of MSU-IPDM (Marawi); Prof. Najifah P. Macaraya, Director of IPDM MSU-GSC; Dr. Khayronesah P. Abbas, MSU-IPDM Peace Action Officer; and Prof. Ludivena Lagrio of IPDM MSU-GSC.

Their shared dedication has culminated in the highly anticipated deployment of the Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV) Digital Inquirer Kit, setting a new benchmark for proactive digital peacebuilding in the region.

"Resilient Campus, Ready Sari: Empowering Communities Through UDRRMO”

In our latest episode, we had the privilege of sitting down with Marah Jean A. Jaylo, the Information Officer of the Mindanao State University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MSU DRRMO). Our discussion provided an in-depth look into how the university navigates safety, proactive disaster preparedness, and community service in an increasingly unpredictable world.

The establishment of the UDRRMO under the late President, Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, marked a vital milestone in MSU’s commitment to safety. Today, its subsequent structural growth is heavily driven by the strategic vision and concrete support of the current MSUS President, Atty. Paisalin P.D. Tago, CPA. Under his administration, the university has prioritized institutional funding and long-term development plans to ensure the office is fully equipped to protect both the campus population and neighboring communities. Guided by its core Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives (VMGO), the UDRRMO successfully ensures that academic excellence at MSU coexists with top-tier emergency preparedness and responsive governance.

To maintain institutional safety, the UDRRMO, under the leadership of Engr. Mohammad Mustapha, strictly aligns its operational programs with standard national and local frameworks for disaster risk reduction. Achieving this level of readiness requires a deeply collaborative ecosystem; the office works closely with the Provincial and City DRRMOs, alongside the university Infirmary and the Department of Fire and Security Services. This collective strategy involves proactive exposure management, where staff are systematically trained to assess, mitigate, and respond to various environmental, structural, and human-induced risks that may threaten the campus periphery. Because the nature of disaster response is incredibly demanding, the university invests heavily in the continuous skill development of its DRRM personnel. The staff undergo rigorous, ongoing training in physical rescue operations, psychological first aid, emergency communication systems, hazard mapping, and rapid damage assessment, ensuring they remain an elite team that is always ready to deploy.

Beyond their immediate duties on campus, the true heart of the UDRRMO lies in its profound service to the broader community. The DRRM staff do not simply wait for emergencies to happen; they actively embed themselves in local areas to build safety frameworks from the ground up. They provide vital grassroots capacity building by conducting localized seminars and hands-on drills for on-campus barangays, ensuring that residents and community leaders know exactly how to react during a crisis. When disaster does strike—whether it is an earthquake, fire, or human-induced crisis—the MSU DRRM team functions as critical first responders. Furthermore, their information sector ensures the public receives timely, accurate hazard advisories, effectively reducing panic and saving lives through awareness. Reflecting on this deep commitment to public service, Marah emphasized the team’s strict 24/7 preparedness and their constant willingness to learn and share life-saving knowledge with the community.

Looking ahead, the future of the UDRRMO is incredibly bright with the continued backing of the university administration. Through these concerted efforts, the UDRRMO is well on its way to making MSU a premier model of institutional resilience in the country.

On May 25, 2026, the campus of Mindanao State University–Main Campus in Marawi City became a vibrant hub of ideas as educators gathered with a shared vision. Representatives from Silliman University’s Religious and Peace Studies Department paid a meaningful visit to MSU’s Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM). Far from a routine meeting, this benchmarking visit was a heartfelt effort to share best practices, exchange local insights, and explore fresh, innovative approaches to peace education and community development.

Hosted by Dr. Acram A. Latiph, the Executive Director of IPDM, the discussion offered a deep dive into the institute's grassroots initiatives and research-driven strategies. Peace is built one step at a time.

For Tirmizy Abdullah, the BARMM elections are part of the unfinished work of normalization in a region still building the institutions of self-governance after decades of struggle.
