🚨 TRAVEL ADVISORY 🚨
July 10, 2026

The MSU Main Campus – University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (UDRRMO) advises all motorists and members of the traveling public that portions of the Marawi–Malabang Road, particularly along Barangays Inoma and Pindolonan, Municipality of Calanogas, Lanao del Sur, are currently closed to all vehicular traffic.

The temporary road closure is due to multiple landslides, flooding, and fallen trees, making the affected sections unsafe for travel.

Personnel from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) are continuously conducting monitoring and road-clearing operations to restore safe passage. Warning signs have likewise been installed in the affected areas to guide motorists and prevent accidents.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to postpone travel through the affected route and instead use the Maharlika Highway (Cotabato–Malabang–Lanao del Norte Road)** until the Marawi–Malabang Road has been declared safe and passable by the concerned authorities.

The MSU UDRRMO encourages everyone to remain vigilant, monitor official advisories, and prioritize safety when traveling.

Please share this advisory to help inform other road users.

On June 15, 2026, at approximately 10:30 AM, the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (UDRRMO) Responders conducted a preventive tree-trimming operation in the area between Bolawan Hall and Rajah Dumduma Hall, MSU Main Campus, Marawi City.

The activity was carried out upon the request of the Dormitory Manager of Rajah Dumduma Hall and with the approval of the UDRRMO Director, Engr. Mohammad M. Mustapha, MPA. The operation focused on removing overhanging and potentially hazardous tree branches that could pose risks to pedestrians and passing vehicles.

This proactive measure was undertaken to minimize possible accidents, enhance public safety, and maintain a secure environment within the university premises.

The UDRRMO remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the MSU community through timely hazard mitigation and responsive disaster risk reduction initiatives.

🌏 COTABATO TRENCH: SOURCE OF SOME OF MINDANAO’S STRONGEST EARTHQUAKES

Following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore near Maasim, Sarangani on June 8, 2026, attention has once again turned to the Cotabato Trenchβ€”one of the Philippines’ most active sources of powerful earthquakes.

Located in the waters south of Mindanao, the Cotabato Trench is a subduction zone where tectonic plates converge and collide. The continuous movement of these plates can generate major earthquakes and, in some cases, trigger tsunamis.

The trench is also linked to the devastating 1976 Moro Gulf Earthquake, a magnitude 8.0 event that struck on August 17, 1976. The resulting tsunami ravaged coastal communities across Mindanao and claimed thousands of lives, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in Philippine history.

Given the region’s seismic activity, earthquake and tsunami preparedness remains crucial for communities across Mindanao, particularly those located near active faults and trench systems.

Following the heavy rainfall on June 14, 2026, several large trees toppled within the vicinity of Rajah Dumduma Hall at MSU Main Campus, Marawi City. The incident was attributed to weakened root systems caused by saturated ground conditions.

In response, the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (UDRRMO) responders carried out clearing and assessment operations to remove obstructions, mitigate potential hazards, and help ensure the safety of the University community.

The UDRRMO remains committed to maintaining campus safety and readiness through prompt and effective emergency response services.
