The Mathematics Department recently held its Stat Talks Mini Seminar last May 11, an event that proved to be a resounding success. Attended by students from BS Mathematics, BS Statistics, and other programs such as Science Education, the seminar showcased the dynamic role of Statistics and Mathematics in understanding real-world phenomena. Its goal is to foster appreciation not only among Statistics majors but also among students from other disciplines, creating a vibrant community of learners united by mathematics.
The speakers focused on modeling phenomena across diverse fields โ from biology and ecology to health, business, and education. Central to these discussions was the role of reliability to ensure that models consistently produce dependable results, making them trustworthy tools for decision-making to solve pressing problems, bridging theory with practical applications.
Adding a personal touch, the seminar featured short appreciation videos from successful alumni of the BS Statistics program. Their stories of professional growth and achievement brought encouragement to current students, reminding them of the opportunities that await them beyond graduation.
The Stat Talks Mini Seminar stands as a testament to the Mathematics Departmentโs commitment to nurturing intellectual curiosity and interdisciplinary collaboration. With its blend of academic rigor and inspiring alumni engagement, it is poised to become a cornerstone of student learning and appreciation for years to come.
