FEATURE | 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧— 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Representing SCIENTIA - The Official Student Publication of CNSM as an active journalist, 𝗔𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗖. 𝗨𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 graced the one-day event, 𝗦𝗜𝗕𝗬𝗔: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟯𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, for the second time following last year’s attendance.

SIBYA is an annual one-day event spearheaded by The Crusader, official student publication of the Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan. With the goal to encourage and pique the interests of people in journalism and intellectual communication, it serves as the perfect place to elevate the discourse on related topics. This year’s 13th installation was held on June 10, 2025 at Cagayan de Oro City, with the theme, 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩: 𝘋𝘦𝘧𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘺. Guest speakers included Mr. Marco Aguja, Mr. Chino Gaston, and Mr. Ryan Rosauro.

Like always, Umpat attended the event not only to be a part of the discourse— but to also add to his stack of achievements. Joining the college category of the Photography Competition, he won CHAMPION. His prowess extends beyond the written word to include an artistic eye for photography.

Congratulations, Dean Dr. Henry P. Aringa!

FEATURE | 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐭

Princess Naomie Amirel, an undergraduate student from the Department of Biology, recently represented both her university and the Philippines at the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowship Program in Spring 2025. Fully funded through the U.S. Embassy, the five-week long training was held at Northern Arizona University and focused on civic engagement.

During the program, Amirel and other fellows explored how communities can work together to address various social issues. They met with officials, academic researchers, and non-governmental organizations.

Although her field of interest lies in biology, Amirel found the experience relevant and eye-opening. She discovered that civic engagement is not limited to politics. Instead, it plays a role in many areas of life.

Part of the program included visitation and meeting with American natives. There, Amirel learned about their history, heritage and the challenges they face in modernity. These encounters gave her a deeper appreciation for cultural identity and social justice.

Some people were surprised with her decision to join a program that was off the peripheral of her plans, believing it had no connection with her studies. However, she is visionary. For her, biology is closely tied to the environment and public health - fields that affect the lives of people. She feels that scientists, too, should take part in community efforts and speak on issues that matter.

Amirel came back home with renewed passion, fresh perspectives, global connections, and broader view of what serving means. Ameril is nearing the end of her college life, proudly waving the banner of MSU in several presentations, which signifies her 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐭.
