MASIU, LANAO DEL SUR β To create more and better livelihood opportunities for women, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Programme on Assistance for Camp Transformation through Inclusion, Violence Prevention, and Economic Empowerment (PROACTIVE) in partnership with the Task Force on Decommissioned Combatants and their Communities (TFDCC) offered Technical Education and Vocational Training (TVET) courses in this hinterland municipality on Wednesday, August 23.
The TVET courses also aim to provide women village folk here an opportunity to learn essential livelihood skills and enable them to help uplift the living conditions of their families and communities.
The beneficiaries of these courses are the decommissioned Moro Islamic Liberation Front (M**F) combatants and their next of kin, including their wives and children residing in the six previously acknowledged M**F camps in the Bangsamoro region.
Among the courses offered were dressmaking, bread and pastry-making, which are popular among women who want to earn sustainable incomes.
There are, however, a number of women-beneficiaries who are starting to break the mold.
Among them is Sahara (not her real name) who enrolled in a carpentry course. Johara and Sittie (not their real names) enrolled in a driving course.
Meanwhile, Aliah and Haina (not their real names) enrolled in Computer System Servicing (CSS), a vocational program that teaches students how to install, configure, and maintain computer systems and networks.
TVET courses are designed in such a way that trainees can learn skills that are aligned with current labor markets. They have also become effective tools for achieving greater gender equality and bring down unemployment, particularly in the countryside.
The TVET is an integral part of the socioeconomic component of the Normalization Program under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), which aims to transform former M**F combatants and their families into peaceful and productive civilians. # # #
