Choosing a statistical test starts with understanding your research question.

When your goal is to compare averages, the appropriate test depends on how many groups you have and whether the measurements are independent or related.

In this guide, we introduce five commonly used tests:

𝗢𝗻𝗲-𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁-𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁, compares one sample mean with a known or hypothesized value.
𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝘄𝗼-𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁-𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁, compares the means of two independent groups.

When working with data, it is important to know what type of variable you are dealing with.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 can take different values within a range, including decimal values. Examples include height, weight, temperature, and time.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 are values that can be counted and are usually expressed as whole numbers. Examples include the number of students, number of siblings, and number of research participants.
