In celebration of the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 with the theme “𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩,” the Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity research, conservation, and sustainable resource management in Mindanao.

As a premier research center of Central Mindanao University, CEBREM continues to document, conserve, and promote the sustainable use of Mindanao’s rich biological resources through research, conservation, and extension initiatives in partnership with national and international institutions.

Since its institutionalization in 2012, CEBREM has grown into a multidisciplinary center dedicated to biodiversity science and environmental stewardship. Notably, its research initiatives have led to the discovery and description of 60 species new to science, contributing significantly to Philippine biodiversity conservation and demonstrating how local actions can create global impact.

We are proud to share a newly published article in a Scopus-indexed journal by Acd. Victor B. Amoroso together with graduate students Pamela Joy F. Orias, Ermalene C. Taer, and Yves Paul M. Montero, highlighting 25 years of Philippine plant discoveries and the urgent need for biodiversity conservation. 🌿🇵🇭

The Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) proudly announces the release of a 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 titled 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝘁. 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆: 𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲. This comprehensive field guide highlights the rich diversity of seed plants found in the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The book is a collaborative work authored by a distinguished group of researchers and botanists, including Dr. Victor B. Amoroso, Dr. Noel E. Lagunday, Dr. Danilo N. Tandang, Mr. John Michael M. Galindon, Dr. Maria Melanie M. Guiang, Dr. Fulgent P. Coritico, Dr. Florfe M. Acma, and Dr. Peter W. Fritsch. Their combined expertise and extensive fieldwork have resulted in an essential resource for scientists, conservationists, students, and nature enthusiasts interested in plant diversity and conservation.

The publication was reviewed by Dr. William SM. Gruezo, Chief Editor & Chairman of the Board of Editors of Asia Life Sciences, and features a foreword by Dr. Mary Sylvette T. Gunigundo, Director IV of the Office of Planning, Research and Knowledge Management at the Commission on Higher Education.

This publication not only serves as a practical identification guide but also contributes significantly to ongoing efforts in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and the sustainable management of one of the Philippines’ most ecologically important natural areas.

Researchers from the Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) and the Center for Natural Science Research (CNSR) of Central Mindanao University successfully conducted the initial presentation and turnover of the Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) materials to the Provincial Government of Camiguin, the DENR–PENRO Camiguin, and the LGUs of Barangay Pandan and Barangay Baylao on March 30–31, 2026.

The CEPA materials were developed as part of the research project entitled “Diversity and Assessment of Flora and DNA Barcodes of Selected Species in Mt. Timpoong–Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument.” The project is led by Academician Victor B. Amoroso, with Dr. Fulgent P. Coritico serving as Co-Project Leader. The initiative is supported through a research grant from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The project is implemented in partnership with Camiguin Polytechnic State College, represented by Dr. Alexander Morados, and NAGPAKABANA, a non-government organization headed by Chairman Monico Lagubis.

This initiative aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation, environmental awareness, and sustainable forest management in the Mt. Timpoong–Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument through science-based information and active community engagement.

The project team includes Dr. Maria Melanie M. Guiang, Mr. Noe P. Mendez, Dr. Noel E. Lagunday, Ms. Alicia B. Rin, and Ms. Qweenie Pie C. Abaya. The project has also contributed to mentoring graduate students Mr. Ken Bien Mar Caballes, Mr. Roy Cabio, and Ms. Cathyrine Pajo, thereby strengthening capacity in biodiversity research and conservation.

The team sincerely thanks the Provincial Government of Camiguin, DENR–PENRO Camiguin, and the partner LGUs for their valuable support and collaboration in advancing biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship.

We are pleased to share the 5th publication for this year of the Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM), Central Mindanao University: “Uncovering Hidden Biodiversity: Over 40 New Records of Pyrenocarpous Lichens for the Philippines” by Ermalene C. Taer, André Aptroot, Victor B. Amoroso, and Manuela Dal Forno. The study reports 41 new country records, including 14 new to Southeast Asia and 4 new to Asia, bringing the total to 224 species and highlighting the Philippines as a key hotspot for pyrenocarpous lichens. This work underscores the need for continued biodiversity research and strengthened conservation efforts for these often-overlooked yet ecologically important organisms. 🌱

This paper was made possible through strong collaboration between CMU–CEBREM and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT), USA.

In addition, four more papers have been accepted for publication and are currently awaiting final release. CEBREM–CMU continues to play a vital role in training graduate students and early-career researchers in biodiversity studies, contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge and conservation efforts in the Philippines.

Forests are more than landscapes of trees—they are vital reservoirs of biodiversity, regulators of climate, protectors of watersheds, and sources of livelihood that sustain life and ecological balance.

Through research, conservation, and extension initiatives, CMU-CBREM promotes scientific understanding and sustainable management while inspiring collective action to safeguard these ecosystems.

As environmental challenges intensify, we must continue to protect, restore, and value our forests as enduring foundations of life, resilience, and hope. 🌳
