CMU Palaro โ€” Cedric Aleonar and Marjun Nerio of the Striking Sphinx salvaged a podium finish in the Menโ€™s Doubles pickleball event, overcoming a challenging round robin campaign to claim the bronze medal with a decisive win over the Eagles.

The Sphinx pair struggled early in the eliminations, opening with a narrow straight-sets loss to the Aggie Bulls, 10โ€“11, 9โ€“11. They absorbed another setback against the Eagles, falling 6โ€“11, 7โ€“11, placing them at risk of missing the podium.

Aleonar and Nerio, however, kept their campaign alive with a hard-fought victory over the Orcas. After splitting the first two sets, 11โ€“9 and 7โ€“11, the duo delivered in the deciding set, 11โ€“7, to secure their first win.

They followed with a tightly contested match against the Wildcats, taking the opening set, 11โ€“8, before dropping the next two, 3โ€“11 and 8โ€“11, to close the round robin stage.

Entering the bronze medal match, the Sphinx tandem faced the Eagles once more in a rematch with higher stakes. Aleonar and Nerio dropped the first set, 9โ€“11, but responded under pressure, edging the second, 11โ€“10, to force a decider. In a tense final set, they held their composure to secure an 11โ€“10 victory, clinching the bronze.

The win highlighted the pairโ€™s resilience, bouncing back from early losses to finish strong and deliver a podium result for the Striking Sphinx.

In a tightly contested menโ€™s football showdown, the Striking Spinx edged out the Wildcats with a narrow 1โ€“0 victory at the University Grandstand. The lone goal came from Brent Quinahan, with a crucial assist from Art Madjos, sealing the win for the Spinx.

As the match unfolded, both teams displayed strong defensive plays and quick transitions, but it was the Striking Spinx who capitalized on a key opportunity. Quinahanโ€™s composed finish, set up by Madjosโ€™ well-timed assist, broke the deadlock and ultimately made the difference in the game.

The Wildcats pushed to equalize, showing grit and persistence, but the Spinx defense held firm until the final whistle. With disciplined positioning and teamwork, the Striking Spinx protected their slim lead and secured the hard-fought victory.

With the win, the Striking Spinx now turn their attention to the crucial upcoming match between the Eagles and the Orcas. Their championship hopes hang in the balance, as they need the Eagles to secure a victory to advance and face the Aggie Bulls in the finals. However, if the Orcas come out on top, the Spinx will settle for a third-place finish, ending their campaign just short of the championship stage.
