BaliliNHS Hosts Mankayan District Schools Press Conference

Despite the inclement weather, Balili National High School (BaliliNHS) successfully hosted the Mankayan District Schools Press Conference on September 8, bringing together campus journalists from elementary and secondary schools across the district.

Anchored on the theme “Mapanuri, Mapanindigan, at Mapanagutang Pamamahayag,” the conference provided young journalists with opportunities to sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of responsible and principled journalism.

The participants learned from speakers with expertise in various fields of campus journalism. Chris A. Bartolo handled Radio Broadcasting and Sports Writing, while Ryk Van Eruel B. Godoy led the session on Photojournalism.

Hanna C. Lacsamana discussed Editorial Writing and Sci-Tech Writing; Ireneo L. Domiguen, Column Writing; Wreigh Jan Tamayo, New Media and Editorial Cartooning; and Johanes B. Godoy, Feature Writing.

For Copy Reading and Headline Writing, Jane C. Cadalig handled the elementary category, while Denia F. Tanas handled the secondary category.

BaliliNHS School Head Edwin S. Ayangdan welcomed the participating schools, speakers, and guests and assured them of their safety and comfort throughout the activity. He also sought the assistance of the barangay health workers headed by Dr. Jannin Juan, as well as the barangay tanod team, to provide support in case of emergencies.

The conference encountered some logistical challenges, particularly concerning schedules and room assignments due to unavoidable circumstances. These concerns, however, were immediately addressed by the organizers.

“There were some issues with the schedules and room assignments due to unavoidable circumstances, but these were resolved immediately. As journalists, we have learned to be flexible and adapt to unexpected situations,” said Delia Bandao, one of the coordinators.

Despite the weather and logistical hurdles, the conference pushed through, giving the district’s young journalists a venue to develop their skills while reinforcing the values of critical thinking, integrity, and accountability in journalism.

The successful conduct of the conference highlighted not only the participants’ commitment to campus journalism but also the host school’s efforts to provide a safe and meaningful venue for the district’s young journalists to learn, connect, and grow as responsible and flexible advocates of truth.

Parents Continue Cleanup Drive Despite Drizzles

Intermittent rain did not stop parents from continuing cleanup and preparation work at Balili National High School on Monday, August 31, as the school readied its grounds and facilities for the upcoming District Schools Press Conference (DSPC).

The rain came on and off during the activity, with the parents at times working under light drizzle to attend to necessary cleanup, repair, and safety work around the school.

Among the improvements was the installation of steel matting on the front portion of the administration gate to prevent stray cats from entering through the gaps and leaving foul odors in the area.

The parents also continued weeding and cleaning the front and back portions of the KUBOs, leveling debris from a damaged wall in front of the girls’ comfort room to make the area safer for learners, and mowing the school grounds.

Meanwhile, DSPC Elementary and Secondary coordinators Delia M. Bandao of Palatong ES, Clariza K. Tad-o of Guinaoang NHS, and Jennifer D. Antonio of Cabacab NHS met with school staff for a coordination and planning meeting for the upcoming DSPC.

Former PTA President Joseph Balong-angey also joined the meeting together with the school staff as preparations for the event continued.

Rain or shine, the PTA officers rolled up their sleeves and got to work as early as 7 a.m., bringing not only their manpower but also their own welding machine and grass cutter to help prepare the school for the incoming District Schools Press Conference.

Led by PTA President, Mr. Fred Laguitao, the officers arrived as early as 7 a.m., with others following in staggered arrivals until 8 a.m. Several club officers also joined the effort, serving as errand runners and assistants throughout the activity.

The bayanihan effort focused on improving the school grounds and facilities in preparation for the upcoming District Schools Press Conference.

Among the tasks accomplished were mowing the school grounds, weeding the school parks, welding the metal support stand of the water tank for the Girls’ Comfort Room, redesigning the metal drums purposely for incinerating trash, and clearing the kubos of scattered litter and including trash stuffed between the bamboo slats of the "Kubos."

Despite the rain, the volunteers continued working to make the school environment cleaner, more orderly, and ready to welcome delegates and participants to the press conference.

Kagawad Mario O-oc and Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) Cupoz Mariano also joined the activity and generously sponsored lunch for the workers.

With some tasks still unfinished, the PTA officers will continue the cleanup and improvement work on Monday, August 31, 2026.
