PROJECT URNONG (Uplifting Reading, Nurturing Oneness & Nurturing Godliness): Book Drive 2021
Brigada Pagbasa is an extension of Brigada Eskwela campaign. This aims to promote participation of the community and partner-stakeholders to promote literacy among Filipino learners.
According to Rommel Fuerte, the Executive Director of World Vision on the Philippines, “Literacy, most especially amongst the children and youth, is one of the key factors that determines how well a country progresses in this rapidly-changing world. We have an unfortunate reality where some Filipinos, both young and old, are struggling with their literacy skills”.
Further, “Literacy is the first step towards freedom, towards liberation from social economic constraints. It is the prerequisite for development, both individual and collective. It reduces poverty and inequality, creates wealth, and helps to eradicate problems of nutrition and public health.” (Azoulay, 2018)
If we raise the literacy of our learners this means that we are ensuring them a good future, it is vital to train young minds to acquire knowledge through reading.
In the Philippines, according to UN, the literacy rate is 97,95% among Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. While the literacy rate showed the country’s improvement from the past years. There is still a staggering number of children in the country who face literacy challenges. The remaining gap reflected in the study above shows that more work must be done to address this pressing issue.
As part of the Supreme Student Government Officers Action Plan to improve reading habits and literacy among the Guinaoang National High School learners, the establishment of reading centers in areas under the jurisdiction of the school is seen to be a crucial step in the slow and steady progress of the said objective.
In order to realize this, we are partnering with the host communities to spearhead the following:
1. Identify a conducive area where the Reading Center may be established, and is readily accessible to learners.
2. Establish the Reading Center through the provision of tables, chairs, book shelves and other amenities.
3. Secure the reading center.
On the other hand, the school and the Supreme Student Government will be in charge of the following:
1. Provide reading materials through BOOK DONATION DRIVE.
2. Set schedules for Community-based instructions and community immersion to ensure that the learners are updated.
3. Assist the community in the provisions of other needed materials for the reading center.
4. Coordinate with the Local Government Units particularly with the Chairman on the Committee of Education for assistance.
With the provisions stipulated above, we the SUPREME STUDENT GOVERNMENT OFFICERS of Guinaoang National High School is requesting your good hearts to be a part of our BOOK DONATION DRIVE to realize this cause.
You may directly drop your BOOK DONATIONS at Guinaoang National High School or you may contact our FB Page for more details.
Thank you very much and may the Almighty bless us all.
