HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF MTC-COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

The Manila Theological College (MTC) was established in 1993 as a religious non-denominational and non-governmental missionary school. The establishment of the College of Medicine (COM) was part of its expansion program. The MTC College of Medicine (MTC-COM) is fundamentally a non-profit organization rather than a business enterprise. It aims to develop physicians who shall spread Christian values as well as attend to the health and spiritual needs of communities in the local and global settings.

Since its inception, the MTC-COM curriculum espouses Outcomes-Based Education via a Discipline-based approach towards medical training, learning, research, community immersions and outreaches. It further envisions itself to be the leading Christian Medical Institution in Asia by providing quality, holistic and humane medical education guided by Christian values and ethical principles.

It had its organizational beginnings in 2011 and was granted full permit to operate by the Commission of Higher Education in April 16, 2016. On the 15th of August 2016, it opened its doors to its pioneer batch of medical students. MTC-COM was formally acknowledged as a member institution at the 50th Anniversary of the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges, Foundation Inc (APMC FI) held at the Novotel Manila last February 1-3, 2017. Congruently, Lumos Medica Student Council, the MTC-COM medical student council organization, successfully represented and participated in APMC-Student Network during the said dates. Other notable activities include, the first community immersion and outreach on 9th November 2016 held at Barangay 581 Zone 57 District IV of the City of Manila conducted by Department of Preventive, Family and Community Medicine faculty and its pioneer batch; One of the accomplishments of its pioneer batch, is the MTC-COM Barangay Health Station located at Barangay 581 Zone 57 District IV of the City of Manila. Wherein, community level health lectures on vaccination, teenage pregnancy, vector control & sanitation as well as a free clinic for the residents was conducted during its inauguration. Furthermore, on the 1st June 2019, the pioneer batch begun their Clinical Clerkship at Tondo Medical Center, as the Base Hospital, with rotations at the National Children’s Hospital, Quirino Memorial Medical Center and National Center for Mental Health. MTC-COM currently has more than 100 medical students at different year levels.

The MTC-COM is located at the 5th, 6th and 7th floors of the Manila Theological College Main Building situated along 478 Mangga Avenue, Sampaloc, Manila. These dedicated floors house the administrative offices and the complete medical educational facilities that includes modern lecture rooms, physical and cyber libraries as well as laboratories. Furthermore, A Gymnasium, Ecumenical Chapel, Conference rooms, Research facilities and study lounges are also provided for needs of the student body and has its Junior Medical Internship/ Clinical Clerkship at Tondo Medical Center, its Base Hospital.

Dr May Emmeline B. Montellano, a Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist, respected academician and leading researcher, is the current Dean who passionately leads a roster of competent and distinguish Medical Faculty in educating and training future five-star physicians, both locally relevant and globally competitive.

This academic year, MTC-COM is opening its doors to new medical students who are committed and tenacious to become dynamic physicians in the future communities they choose to serve.
