We are delighted to share that the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Herbarium (PUPH) is now among these recognized herbaria, with 2,450 accessioned plant specimens—and many more collections currently undergoing accessioning! 🎉
This milestone reflects PUPH's growing contribution to botanical research, biodiversity conservation, scientific documentation, and environmental education. Every specimen preserved helps safeguard our nation's rich plant heritage while providing valuable resources for research, teaching, and future scientific discoveries.

PUPH proudly advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 4, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17, demonstrating how herbarium collections contribute to education, innovation, biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and scientific collaboration.
From hands-on learning and science education (SDG 4), innovative preservation of scientific collections (SDG 9), algae and macrophyte collections supporting aquatic biodiversity research alongside terrestrial plant conservation (SDG 14 and 15), to medicinal plant research (SDG 3), preserving our natural heritage (SDG 11), providing biodiversity records for climate studies (SDG 13), and strengthening partnerships among researchers and institutions (SDG 17), PUPH continues to serve as a valuable resource for science and society.

𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮?

Ang waling-waling (𝙑𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖 𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖) ay kinikilalang isa sa pinakamagagandang uri ng orkidyas na endemiko sa Mindanao. Tinagurian din itong “Reyna ng mga Orkidya sa Pilipinas” at minsang itinuturing na sagrado ng mga katutubong Bagobo, na iniuugnay ito sa isang diwata.

Ayon sa Senate Bill No. 841 ng ika-19 na Kongreso (2022), o “𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮,” ang waling-waling ay sumasalamin sa likas na katangian ng Pilipino. Tumutubo ito sa matitibay na punongkahoy ngunit hindi nagiging parasito—tulad ng isang Pilipinong nagsusumikap maabot ang mga pangarap nang hindi nananapak o umaasa sa iba. May kakayahan din itong umangkop sa kapaligiran, na sumisimbolo sa katatagan ng mga Pilipino sa gitna ng mga pagsubok. Higit pa rito, hindi ito invasive o nakasisira sa likas nitong tirahan, na nagpapakita ng kakayahan ng mga Pilipino na tumayo sa sariling paa habang maayos na nakikipamuhay sa kapwa at sa iba’t ibang lahi.

Itong mga katangiang ito ay inaasam din ng 𝑩𝑺𝑩𝑰𝑶 3-5-𝑷𝑻-𝑨𝑷𝑩 na makamit at maisabuhay sa kanilang pang-araw-araw na gawain at pakikisalamuha.
