Educational Research Webinar Series: Foundations of Educational Research: Thematic Analysis
In an educational landscape that's constantly evolving, strong research skills are more critical than ever for educators, policymakers, and academics. On August 9, 2025, GEO hosted its inaugural webinar, bringing together educators and researchers to explore the foundations of qualitative research, with a special focus on thematic analysis.
This half-day intensive featured Mr. Richard M. Rillo, who provided an insightful exploration of qualitative research methodologies and their challenges. The session provided participants with valuable knowledge to enhance their understanding and practical application of these methods.
Mr. Rillo expertly connected theory to practice by highlighting the growing importance of qualitative educational research. He discussed ethical considerations and demonstrated how thematic analysis is a versatile and accessible way to extract meaningful insights from complex data. His clear, step-by-step walkthrough of inductive thematic analysis—including transcription, familiarization, coding, theme development, and interpretation—equipped attendees with actionable tools they can immediately use in their research and teaching.
The webinar also introduced participants to qualitative data analysis software like MAXQDA, emphasizing how technology can boost efficiency while reinforcing the vital role of a researcher's interpretive skills. An engaging Q&A segment further enriched the learning experience by clarifying key concepts and deepening participants' understanding.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. The event was praised for its seamless organization, clear participation guidelines, and effective use of pre- and post-assessments that maximized learning outcomes. GEO's dedication to fostering global citizenship and local responsibility was a guiding principle behind the event’s impactful experience.
Participants specifically praised the presentation's clarity and relevance, with many noting the immediate applicability of what they learned to their teaching methods and thesis projects. Quantitative evaluations showed near-perfect satisfaction across all aspects—from management to logistics—underscoring the event’s success.
This first webinar in GEO’s educational research series was a remarkable achievement—well-executed, enlightening, and impactful. It set a strong precedent for upcoming programs and helped build a vibrant global community ready to use qualitative research and thematic analysis to drive educational progress. For those committed to advancing their skills in qualitative inquiry, this series signifies a vital move toward professional growth and research excellence. Stay tuned for more transformative learning experiences!
The GEO Webinar Series 2 is up via zoom on August 16, featuring Dr. Isabel Anicoche-Victorino, Chief Education Program Specialist, Bureau of Curriculum Development, DepEd.
