NEWS | AB Economics senior, set a convention about Preserving the Past and Fueling the Future
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Department of Economics held this yearโs second National Collegiate Economics Convention (NCEC) on November 25, 2024, at the UST Central Auditorium. The seminar, with the theme "Culture Shock: The Tapestry of Economics and Culture" covered subjects such as the connection between economic growth and heritage preservation.
Hosted by fourth-year AB Economics students Andrea Perlas and Patricia Adrada, numerous well-known speakers expanded their knowledge to a wide range of audience members both inside and outside the university.
The conference began with an introductory speech by Ronald I. Flores, the Assistant Department Head of the Manila City Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts, who stated that the history of Manila is the history of the entire Philippines. He emphasized the need to have a forum to explore the nexus between economic progress and preservation.
Geoffrey Rhoel C. Cruz stressed the significance of understanding the past, present, and future when discussing culture by emphasizing the subject of his presentation, "Cultural Heritage? Nakakain ba 'yan?". Food on the table is more important in the Philippines, where the adage "if it doesn't pay, it doesn't stay" is reinforced. Despite this, he underlined that cultural legacy helps create a sustainable and equitable economy. Sustainability is guaranteed by culture. "May pera sa kultura," he said. Above all, it is not only about the money; it is about the fundamental value of cultural capital and national pride.
Furthermore, Asst. Prof. Joselito T. Sescon discussed the economy as a whole, with a lecture titled "Transformation of Philippine Economy and Society: Social Formations and Everyday Culture". He highlighted that culture serves as a framework for directing the world and locating individuals within their existential reality.
Sescon also added that, "Culture is part of the experience of the everyday world." He concluded that the transformation of the economy by its three components will determine the access and distribution of resources and that understanding the logical economic basis and documenting everyday politics among groups can benefit the country as a whole.
"The Reality of Urban Poor Lives: Multidisciplinary Challenges for Economists," Mary Racelis, UNICEF Regional Director and the first female professor at Ateneo de Manila University, provided an in-depth look at the struggles faced by Manilaโs urban poor. Drawing from decades of research, she discussed the structural barriers perpetuating poverty, highlighting the urban poorโs exclusion from mainstream economic benefits. Despite this, she pointed to the resilience and community solidarity of these groups, especially the bayanihan spirit, as sources of hope.
Racelis addressed key issues like systemic housing problems, where the urban poor are excluded from government housing programs and face a lack of affordable options. She also focused on gender and economic inequalities, particularly the challenges women face in these communities, who are often relegated to low-paying, insecure jobs. She called for gender-sensitive policies to empower women and foster equitable development.
Additionally, Dr. Racelis critiqued globalization, noting its uneven benefits, which largely favor the middle and upper classes while exploiting the urban poor, who contribute essential yet undervalued labor.
Concluding her talk, Dr. Mary Racelis urged policymakers to ground urban planning in the lived experiences of marginalized communities and foster inclusive solutions that address systemic inequalities, leaving attendees with a call to action for transformative change.
The NCEC: Culture Shock concluded with heartfelt acknowledgments from Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Alain Jomarie Santos, PHD, CPA., and Course Facilitator Inst. Ederliza V. Magpantay.

NEWS | NCEC: BEYOND THE BIN | AB Economics seniors, conducts convention on waste management hurdles
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Department of Economics held the National Collegiate Economics Convention (NCEC) at the UST Central Auditorium on November 20, 2024, with the theme โBeyond the Bin: An Untapped Economy.โ Organized in partnership with UST Artlets Economics Society (AES), it tackled topics regarding the role of a proper waste management system and its importance in having a sustainable and circular economy.
The forum, hosted by Erika Yabut and Alfons Lozano, 4th year AB Economics students, featured speakers from the private sector and the academe sharing their knowledge and experiences relevant to environmental protection and economic growth.
Rudi Ramin, Commercial Director of PCX Markets, emphasized the critical role of RA 11898 or Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law and private sector collaboration in the fight against plastic pollution.
Ramin added that plastic pollution is not only an environmental issue but also a livelihood and health one, thus the importance of private companies collaborating on a better waste management system.
In connection, being a researcher from the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center, Hauvre Somova highlighted the gaps in the trash disposal of the country. She presented her ongoing research entitled "Waste Sector Role in the Philippine Waste Management System - missing linkages," which aims to find out the role of informal sectors in the waste segregation system.
Additionally, Mike Tagarao, Sustainability Manager of Holcim Philippines, emphasized the potential of technology in private companies in lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the importance of renewable energy to aid in a net-zero future. Tagarao explained that Holcim uses alternative fuel in making cement as part of their aim in decarbonizing Holcim.
The speakers also highlighted in a forum the critical role of todayโs youth as consumers in supporting sustainable companies and choosing what to consume, and as citizens in electing officials who prioritize both economic growth and environmental protection in having a sustainable economy.
The UST Department of Economics will hold the 2nd day of the convention entitled, โCulture Shock! The Tapestry of Economics and Cultureโ on November 25, 2024, at the UST Central Laboratory Auditorium, focusing on the topic connection of cultural values and economic systems.
