In 2009, then BBrC159 graduating students submitted a final project proposal to Dr. Divine Pasumbal for their subject in Broadcast Relations and Promotions (RC203). Months later, their concept was formally launched in the university as the PUP G*t Apolinario Mabini Awards for individuals who have shown excellence in their chosen fields.

This year, PUP launches the same event but will only focus on media and advertising, and is now called the PUP Mabini Media Awards.
