𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | COMMSOC holds general assembly and acquaintance party
Escolarians from the Communication and Media program gathered at the Librada Avelino Hall Seminar Room 2 & 3 for the annual general assembly and acquaintance party, October 28.
With the theme "Back to the Retro Future: The Past's Vision of the Future", the program was spearheaded by the Communication and Media Society (COMMSOC).
In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Ricky Rosales, COMMSOC Adviser and Program Head of Communication and Media, delivered a warm and encouraging message to the attendees, sharing his hope for students to continue the excellence of the past into the future.
Afterward, Catherine Bautista, former COMMSOC president, passed on the key of responsibility to the incoming officers, symbolizing the transition of leadership and the trust placed in them to carry on the organization's mission and vision.
Meanwhile, COMMSOC Secretary Savannah Maria Lantay presented the total number of members and conducted a reading of the newly updated constitution and by-laws.
This was followed by an icebreaker activity called the whisper challenge, played by pairs, one alumni, and one active student.
After the fun and energizing activity, Jeron Ellana, COMMSOC Year 13 president, presented the council's action plan for the SY '23-'24.
In his speech, he asked for the participation and support of the COMMunity in COMMSOC’s future events.
"They say 13 is a bad number. But this year, let's turn the bad luck into good luck," Ellana said.
Elisha Chloe Bautista and Marielle Joanna Sincuya, COMMSOC treasurer and auditor, also reported on the organization's financial statement and budget allocation.
Meanwhile, Kyle Crispino, CEU-Manila University Student Council (USC) Secretary, delivered his pledge of support to COMMSOC.
This segment was followed by an intermission performance from Adrienne Martinez, the Executive Producer of Balitang Centro.
Afterward, COMMSOC Vice President Christ Jereco Nuguid, gave an orientation on the proper procedures related to Communication & Media Lab and Equipment, as well as the proper way of filling out the request forms needed.
Following this, Communication and Media Alumni presented their "Looking Back to the Future" messages to the students.
John Bolivar (President, Year 11), Vanessa Canlas (Vice President, Year 11), Allyssa Nievera (President, Year 8), and Mitzi Ann Badua (President, Year 5), shared their experiences and learnings, offering their support for the current COMMSOC officers.
“Sana kahit mahirapan, bumalik tayo sa core kung bakit natin pinili mag Comm,” Canlas said.
Meanwhile, the sub-organizations of Communication and Media gave their pledges of support from the CEU News and Current Affairs, Centro Creatives, and Centro Dalumat, underscoring the solidarity within the COMMunity.
The event concluded with closing remarks and acknowledgments from COMMSOC officers, followed by a snack break and the start of the acquaintance party. The first game was "Pakandong po Kuya," followed by a costume catwalk with three finalists and two winners.
The event ended with a photo opportunity with the attendees, as well as the participating speakers.

What is not a scam but feels like a scam?

Who knew? That from the fertile depths of the womb emerged a luminous o**m, it has grown to become a legendary lawyer, a brilliant scientist, a lover of your own, a best friend since high school, and the one who lovingly scoops your favorite frozen treat at the corner shop. I mean, thank God for the creation of ice cream, right?
The splendor of life is truly a sight to behold, with all its treasures of fortune, titles, love, possessions, and marvelous wonders.
Yet, alas, only those with opulence at their disposal can fully and comfortably indulge in life's lavishness. For the breadth of living can serve as a boon to certain souls, while for others, it remains a cost too high to bear.
The ice cream I mentioned, I’d like to think it was made for all. But it remains a luxury afforded by only some, while others are left to watch from the sidelines, yearning for but never indulging in the simple treat.
Forlornly, not all individuals are granted the opportunity to experience life in the same manner as the rest. And for that, many individuals find themselves pushed so far down a hole, or to a point beyond visible horizon, that they believe they have no option but to surrender to their fate and perish.
It's easy as one, two, and three to cite a scientific, sociological, or even a philosophical explanation for this Su***de Prevention Month piece and blabber on and on about how such complex phenomenons occur, (Like how I usually would excitedly do in any other article). The incorporation of technical jargon and citations can undoubtedly substantiate any scholarly work, as it serves as a primary basis for credibility.
However, in the process of writing this paper, I find myself in a constant state of deliberation between typing and deleting discussions from Emile Durkheim's suicidology, to the Neuroscience of Suicidal Behavior. Toiling away as I have endlessly tried to include all the relevant "factors" that purportedly drive individuals to end their own lives and make this paper seem “perfect”, I find myself feeling drained–almost defeated.
Perhaps, I should leave this kind of intellectual exercise to the scholars.
In truth, my greatest aspiration for this paper is not to present a pedagogical treatise on the subject, but rather to simply, yet desperately tell you: “𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦, 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.”
If I were to be honest, I don’t know how else to say it in the most non-harmful rhetoric way.
I’d like to tell you to hang in there, but I understand if you’re carrying too much and it’s weighing you down. I’d like to tell you to hang in there, but I understand the load of sorrow, remorse, regret, frustration, and wrath that may prove unbearable for whatever reason it may be. I’d like to tell you to hang in there, but I understand the gravity of waking up every day and having to face a society where humans, sadly, aren’t so humane, where it reeks of expectation that a failure to attain it renders one bereft of worth.
Still, I’d like to tell you to hang in there.
Because even though we live in the kind of society where an ice cream is a luxury afforded by only some, I want you to attain that simple treat someday. Not because you have treasures of fortune, titles, possessions, and marvelous wonders; but because you’re an o**m that took root in the womb, a fetus that blossomed to form existence, and most of all, a human brave enough to accept the unexpected obligation of traversing the expense of existence.

𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | Players and Pawns
Have you ever considered the possibility of us being mere pawns in a larger game? With our round heads and small frames, are we sacrificed for the sake of the greater good and glory? A chess game, perhaps? Well, that's not how it's supposed to be.
In a chess game, played on a board with 64 squares, two players make their moves. Similarly, in our society, citizens and leaders are the players. Citizens make their moves through voting, advocacy, and active participation, while leaders shape policy decisions. Each move by these players can shake the figurative board of our nation, impacting its overall state. Just like chess players strategize and plan their next moves, citizens and leaders should align their beliefs with their values and vision ahead of political parties and candidates.
Much like the concept of checks and balances, chess requires an intricate balance between offense and defense. There's an existing balance of power that must be maintained to prevent any one player from dominating the game. In a similar vein, the goal in both scenarios is to checkmate the opponent. It's a game to either win or lose. In democracy, winning means achieving the common good through the will of the majority while protecting the rights of the minority. Losing isn't a defeat; it's a reflection of the people's will and a benefit to all.
Effective democratic leadership demands strategic thinking, which sometimes requires sacrificing short-lived popularity. Popularity is a crucial aspect of this form of government, and with it comes great responsibility. Just as chess players adapt to their opponent's moves, leaders must adapt their policies and actions to address the concerns and priorities of their times.
Chess players improve their game by analyzing their moves, learning from both their successes and failures. It is essential for citizens and leaders to act, learn, and avoid repeating past mistakes, as Liza Soberano's character in Alone/Together wisely puts it, "To forget is to deny the present any significant meaning."
Imagine a chessboard with 64 squares and small wooden pieces that move—endless possibilities exist. Democracy offers various paths, much like the round world and the complexity of infinities, but it can be predictable.
Why do we relate democracy to a chess game, you ask? Because we are the players, not mere pawns.
