The word XuanKong 玄空had been translated and interpreted in many ways. Mostly it depends on the Fengshui school’s understanding of this word.
The SanYuan understanding and interpretation is slightly different from that of the SanHe understanding.
In the QingNang AoYu and TianYu Jing, there were several mention of this word XuanKong.
To quote Qing Nang Ao Yu:
雌与雄交会合玄空,雄与雌玄空卦内寻
Ci and Xiong interaction conforms to XuanKong, Xiong雄 and Ci雌 can find within the Gua of XuanKong玄空.
Ci and Xiong 雌与雄 are actually Yin and Yang, but, they are the ‘substantial” aspect of YinYang. Yin and Yang originally are both the abstract aspect of two extremes, such as male and female.
When we talk about Yin and Yang as Qi, we are referring to the non-substantial abstract aspect. On the other-hand when we talk about Ci and Xiong, we are talking about the substantial solid aspect.
Ci雌 means female.
Xiong雄 means male.
So when you read the classics and find these two words, it actually means the male and female substantial aspect of phenomena.
Another verse is:
玄空卦内寻
明玄空,只在五行中
To understand XuanKong, everything is within the 5 Elements.
This verse has a very deep meaning. One aspect is that it is talking about the Dian Dian Dao theory of the 72 Dragons. Another aspect is it is talking about the universal aspect of XuanKong.
“明玄空,只在五行中” and “玄空卦内寻”
These two phrases are actually pointing towards the mystical and profound YiJing Trigrams and Hexagrams that are in play within the mysterious and abstruse energy of the universe.
The word Xuan 玄means abstruse, mysterious or mystical; or it can mean black, deep dark unknown. The word Kong 空means empty or void; or it can mean the sky or space.
When you coin these two singular words together as XuanKong玄空, and try to find its meaning in any Chinese dictionary, you might not find any specific interpretation or meaning.
Mostly, you might find a break up translation of individual word, such as Xuan 玄as mysterious; and Kong 空as empty.
So, eventually you might need to rely on Chinese Metaphysics masters to give you a translation of this word XuanKong玄空.
In a gist, XuanKong 玄空actually means the ‘Mysterious mystical voidness of the universal space’.
This is very abstract, but, in simple terms it can be understood in the contemporary sense as the ‘Universal energy that gives life to
all phenomena on earth.’
If you read the following phrase, you might see this point.
Tian Yu Jing:
关天关地定雌雄,富贵此中逢。翻天倒地对不同,秘密在玄空。
Great concern of Heaven and Earth is fixing Male and Female; nobility prosperity can be found within.
Flipping the Heaven and overturning the Earth matching not the same, the secret is in the XuanKong.
“the secret is in the XuanKong” actually means you can find the secret working of universal energy in the mysterious voidness of the universe.

To begin this article, I wish to quote for Guo Pu, author of the Zang Shu (Book of Burial), who lived during the Jin Dynasty (circa 276—324 AD):
葬者,藏也,乘生气也。夫阴阳之气,噫而为风,升而为云,降而为雨,行乎地中,谓之生气。
To Bury is to Store; is to ride on Sheng Qi (Growth Qi or Lively Qi).
Yin Yang Qi emits as wind, rises as clouds, descends as rain, seeps into the ground is Sheng Qi.
GuoPu in his opening statement in the ZangShu (Book of Burial) specifically stated that to bury you need Yin Yang Qi and Sheng Qi.
What is Yin Yang Qi 阴阳气 and What is Sheng QI 生气?
To many who had studied Chinese metaphysics and especially those who studied Fengshui, sometimes, are confused by the interchanging use of these two terms in ancient classics and modern writings in Chinese Metaphysics.
According to the YiJing, The Book of Changes which is THE book that is both philosophical and metaphysical, that depicts the all-encompassing phenomena of this universe, that, everything in this world is defined based on the theory of Yin and Yang Qi.
Yin and Yang are two polarities, but within each there is embedded the other.
What does this mean?
This means that within Yin Qi, there is embedded Yang Qi;
Within Yang Qi, there is embedded Yin Qi.
Phenomenon such…..
brightness is Yang, darkness is Yin;
heavy is Yang and lightweight is Yin;
high is Yang and low is Yin etc., etc.
What is Sheng Qi?
It might take many pages of text to really describe Sheng Qi, but here I shall use a short sentence to briefly describe it: ‘Sheng Qi is usable functional Qi that can benefit’.
The opposite of Sheng Qi is Sha Qi 煞气. Sha Qi is something that is detrimental and disruptive to the smooth progress of phenomena. (We shall not go into details about Sha Qi as yet.)
Coming back to Yin Yang Qi and Sheng Qi:
All Qi, whether Sheng Qi or Sha Qi, have within it the Yin and Yang quality.
Within Sheng Qi there is Yin and Yang Qi.
Within Sha Qi, there is also Yin Yang Qi.
Whatever is the quantitative and qualitative composition of Yin Yang Qi within Sheng Qi and Sha Qi, we might not know because now we still do not have an equipment that can measure Sheng Qi, Sha Qi and Yin Yang Qi.
However, there are equipment that can measure negative ion and positive ion in the air, but does that equate to measuring Yin Yang Qi?
Is Yin Yang Qi more than just negative ion and positive ion?
A stumbling block is that there is no scientific empirical evidence acting as proof of Yin Yang Qi, Sheng Qi and Sha Qi.
All our judgement of Sheng Qi, Sha Qi and Yin Yang Qi is based on our interpretation of knowledge as passed on from ancient classics, knowledge passed on from ancient masters, and knowledge gained from our own experiences…………………………….
