A celebration of shared Southeast Asian heritage and solidarity is coming to De La Salle University-Manila.

Soendari Batik & Art, Center for Economics Humanities and Tourism (CEHT), Research Institute and Community Engagement (RICE) Universitas Negeri Malang (UM-Indonesia), the Museum at DLSU, DLSU Southeast Asian Studies Organization (DLSU-SEASON), DLSU-Department of International Studies, and the DLSU-Southeast Asia Research Center and Hub (DLSU-SEARCH), proudly present the Indonesian Batik Exhibition:

“From Java to Manila: Batik Terang Bulan as Living Heritage”

Inspired by the enduring spirit of Bandung, the exhibit highlights how art, culture, and craftsmanship continue to serve as bridges of friendship and understanding across Southeast Asia. Rooted in the vision of Asian-African solidarity and the living traditions of Indonesian batik, the exhibition reflects the continuing relevance of cultural diplomacy in our region today.

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH

The Museum at De La Salle University is extending the exhibition ARTISTIC IMPRINT: Lasting Mark of Creative Influences for the final term of the Academic Year 2025-2026. This show features works by National Artists and well-known Filipino artists from the collections of Wili and Doreen Fernandez and the University.

In celebration of Flores de Mayo, The Museum at De La Salle University will highlight Ibarra de la Rosa’s Lotus Series (1994), part of the University collection. The series showcases vibrant multicolored representations of the lotus and is displayed alongside other masterworks by Filipino artists.

Ibarra de la Rosa (1943-1998) was a Filipino painter from Nueva Ecija who studied at FEATI University College of Fine Arts and was known for his vibrant flower paintings that reflect the spirit of devotion and offering. As an original member of the Dimasalang group and founder of the SPEKTRUM art group, de la Rosa had a big influence on the local art scene. The 1970s were an important period in his career, as he became well known during the major political shifts in the Philippines, including the start of Martial Law in 1972. De la Rosa became a leading figure in contemporary Philippine art for combining his artistic skill with thoughtful ideas on the country’s changing identity.

He was also a recipient of the CCP Thirteen Artists Award, the Rotary Club Art Tilt Award, and the Araw ng Maynila Heritage Award. These honors recognized his careful depictions of Impressionist landscapes, trees, and flowers.

From 1982 to early 1984, Ibarra was engrossed in the lotus flower, considered the symbol of purity, spiritual enlightenment, and rebirth. It also symbolizes the balance of opposing forces—Yin and Yang—representing the journey of humans from darkness to light, mirroring the spirit of Flores de Mayo, where flowers are offered as acts of faith and renewal.

In each variation, Ibarra transformed each subject into a harmonious masterpiece of color, texture, and movement through spontaneous technique, guided by his philosophy: “Art and Life
are the sum total of an unending process of creation from birth to death, from something to nothingness.”

In line with the announcement that classes and work in the Manila campus will shift online on Week 13 of the Second Trimester, The Museum will be closed on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.

Additionally, The Museum will remain closed from Wednesday to Friday, April 1-3, 2026, in observance of the Holy Week.

The Museum will resume regular operations on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

In line with the announcement that classes and work will shift online in Week 11 due to the oil supply problems which affected countries all over the world, including the Philippines, because of the war in the Middle East, The Museum will be closed from March 17, 2026 (Tuesday) to March 19, 2026 (Thursday).

Additionally, The Museum will remain closed on Friday, 20 March 2026, in observance of Eid al-Fitr, as declared by Malacañang Palace.

The Museum will resume regular operations on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
