As AI tools like ChatGPT make take-home and online assignments easier to game, many universities are turning to an old-school solution: oral exams. Faculty at institutions such as the University of Wyoming, Vanderbilt, and UC San Diego are increasingly asking students to explain concepts face to face, where AI assistance is harder to hide.

In these sessions, students sit with a professor for a set time and are questioned on the spot, forcing them to demonstrate real understanding rather than polished written answers. The approach is gaining traction as AI-detection software struggles to reliably tell human work apart from machine-generated content.

Some students say oral exams actually help them learn better and show what they truly know, while educators note that it shifts the focus away from policing AI use and toward assessing genuine comprehension. As AI becomes a permanent part of education, oral exams may signal how teaching and assessment are adapting to the new reality.
