Dr. Rubiano’s memoirs—long hidden in the National Library of Spain and never before translated or cited in Filipino accounts of the Revolution—are made accessible in this English edition to scholars and the general public. As a rare eyewitness narrative, the book offers vivid and compelling insights into the fateful events in Lipa in 1898 and 1899, including the siege of the town, encounters between Filipino revolutionaries and Spanish troops, the treatment of Spanish prisoners of war, and the educational and cultural renaissance that unfolded in the locality. Centered in Southern Luzon, these memoirs illuminate Lipa’s pivotal role not only in the 1898 Philippine Revolution but also in the Philippine-American War, which continued in Batangas long after President Aguinaldo’s surrender—opening powerful windows into a people’s experiences on the eve of nationhood.
This recognition affirms the strength of collaborative scholarship and creative work, and the enduring importance of translation in bringing neglected historical voices into the present.

Malugod na ibinabahagi ng PUP Center for Philippine Studies ang dalawang bagong publikasyon!
𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗰: 𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝗽𝗼𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗼
This anthology gathers a decade's worth of essays and reviews on film by Epoy Deyto, tracing the evolution of his critical practice from personal blogging to politically grounded cultural critique. Beginning with his early blog Kawts Kamote (2009–2015) and later through Missing Codec (2016–present), Deyto reflects on the shifting landscape of online film criticism in the Philippines and its intersections with questions of legitimacy, labor, and creative autonomy.
The book situates film criticism within broader social and historical conditions, arguing that the act of writing about cinema is inseparable from one’s class position and political consciousness. Drawing from Marxist literary and cultural criticism, as well as the influences of Edel Garcellano and Domingo Castro de Guzman, Deyto articulates a “historical poetics” of viewing—where enjoyment, subjectivity, and ideology converge.
At once personal and polemical, Missing Codec reclaims the critic's role as both participant and witness in the struggle over meaning, pleasure, and power in Filipino cinema. It is a testament to the possibilities of independent, self-sustained cultural writing amid a commodified media landscape, foregrounding the political value of criticism as part of the broader terrain of class struggle.

LOOK: The book launch of Missing Codec: A Decade of Film Writing by Epoy Deyto was successfully held yesterday, December 17, 2025, at the PUP Center for Creative Writing, Room 212, Charlie del Rosario Building, PUP Main Campus, Sta. Mesa, Manila.
This volume brings together a decade of writing from Missing Codec, a weblog conceived in the spirit of a software error. Its reviews and critical essays reflect a cinema marked by disruption, one that is glitching, partial, and insistently demanding attention, where writing functions as a form of troubleshooting and an act of imagination and improvisation when established codes fall short. Running through the prose is an abiding commitment to craft and a do-it-yourself ethos shaped not by privilege but by necessity. To engage with cinema from the Third World is, ultimately, to contend with power itself and to assert the possibility of what institutions, markets, and histories have long foreclosed.
Congratulations on your new book, Epoy! We truly look forward to your future publications.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to the students, teachers, writers, and guests who supported this activity. We hope for your continued participation in our future events.

Collected in this volume is a decade's worth of writing for a project called Missing Codec: a web-log modeled from a software error. Captured in the reviews and criticism is a Cinema plagued by playback errors: glitching, incomplete, demanding attention; and where writing becomes a form of troubleshooting: imagining, improvising, and finding language where the codes do not fit. Threaded through the prose is a romance with artisanship and a do-it-yourself ethos, born less of privilege than of necessity. To make sense of cinema from the third world is to wrestle with power itself: to insist on making possible what institutions, markets, and histories have denied.
