Pop ✍️ (The Sixth Derivative of Position with Respect to Time)

It explains an extremely subtle layer of motion by tracking how movement itself keeps changing over time. Imagine a car traveling on a road: position tells where it is, velocity tells how fast it moves, acceleration tells how speed changes, and higher derivatives continue describing deeper levels of change. After acceleration come jerk, snap, crackle, and finally pop — the sixth derivative of position.

Pop measures how rapidly these complex changes in motion evolve. While velocity and acceleration describe effects we easily notice, pop deals with changes so fine that they usually remain hidden in everyday experience. It captures the changing behavior of systems where motion must be controlled with extraordinary precision.

In most ordinary situations, the influence of pop is too small to matter. But in advanced fields such as spacecraft navigation, robotics, precision engineering, and smooth motion design, even tiny fluctuations can affect performance. Tracking pop helps engineers predict and refine motion so that systems remain stable, efficient, and free from unwanted vibrations or sudden disturbances.

NEWS UPDATE: Mechanical Engineering-based organization UP Gears and Pinion or GPs will be suspended for one academic year beginning the first semester of academic year 2026–2027, following the Office of the President's decision regarding the organization's appeal for their misconduct case.

According to the decision signed March 17, the organization’s appeal was partially granted: GPs is no longer found liable for harm to persons and it no longer needs to award actual damages to the complainant. But it is still found liable for other forms of misconduct.

The decision was finalized since GPs did not file an appeal to the Board of Regents within seven working days upon receipt of the decision, as stipulated in the 2012 Student Code of UP Diliman.

Previously, the organization appealed the Engineering dean's initial decision on their college disciplinary council case to the UP Diliman chancellor. It then appealed that decision to the UP president in July 2025, where it similarly asked for a reversal of all charges.

"Ultimately, our goal of experiencing a consistent and fair procedure was achieved through the resolution of that appeal as that process allowed for a proper clarification and reassessment of the concerns that we had in the first place," GPs told the Collegian in an interview.

An anti-sexual harassment complaint against GPs on similar grounds, however, is still pending at the chancellor level.
