Women seafarers account more on the country’s deployment

AS the global shipping community and the Philippines place importance this month on women seafarers as indispensable partners in the maritime industry, the Philippines has made some progress in addressing the numerous hurdles that women seafarers face in joining the traditionally male-dominated profession.

The latest available statistics from the DMW show the country dispatched a total of 32,237 women seafarers out of 504,057 seabased workers deployed in 2024, accounting for a relatively sizable share of 6.7% of the country's total deployment.

This represents a significant improvement from the 1.2% of the global seafarer workforce noted in the BIMCO/ICS 2021 Seafarer Workforce Report, as well as the 2% estimate provided by The Mission to Seafarers using IMO statistics, which translates to about 24,000 women seafarers out of a total global workforce of 1.89 million.

However, only a small portion of the women seafarers deployed last year joined the ranks of traditional seafarers. Most of them took positions onboard passenger ships, primarily in the cruise industry, working in housekeeping, food and beverage, and other hospitality jobs on cruise ships.

Moreover, despite the higher share of the nation's deployment of seabased workers, Filipino women seafarers continue to experience sexual harassment in various forms, including inappropriate comments, threats, physical violence, and sexual assault, as well as salary discrimination, as most women are often confined to support and junior positions, limiting their career progression and pay.

Women also face challenges when transitioning from sea-based to shore-based assignments. Also, onboard, many ships' physical conditions do not support the specific needs of women, such as access to sanitary products and disposal facilities.
