PASASALAMAT
There is so much to be thankful for in today’s commencement exercises—a celebration after so many years of sleepless nights, hard work, and perseverance. Indeed, your hearts are filled with gratitude for the countless people, both named and unnamed, with faces and without, who are responsible for making you who you are now.
Sinasabi ko sa inyong lahat, walang sinuman sa bulwagang ito ang makapagyayabang at makapagsasabing, “I did it my way.” You are who you are because of the countless people who helped you to be where you are and where you will be.
Let’s begin today’s celebration by thanking our grandparents, parents, titos and titas, relatives, and friends.
Let us also thank your teachers, mentors, formators, and most especially our tormentors, who brought out the very best in you even under uncomfortable conditions and honed your knowledge, talents, and capabilities—qualities you thought you had less or none at all.
Now let’s give tribute to the countless people we encounter along the way every single day—our security guards, cleaners, non-academic personnel, magtataho, ice cream vendors, fast-food crew, and many more.

MALASAKIT
PLM is a caring community built on friendship and camaraderie, with a strong spirit of involvement, respect for traditions, and observance of politeness and courtesy at all times, founded on high moral and ethical values.
In the pursuit of the purpose for which PLM was created, you are trained and educated in the fulfillment of the mission for which you are all called. These are the same values, virtues, and principles that I urge you to continue to live by, to espouse, and to inculcate in the culture of the community that you will serve after your life in PLM. Let the three philosophies of Karunungan, Kaunlaran, at Kadakilaan be your guiding stars. Do ordinary things in a very special way—with care, concern, and love.
No matter what profession you pursue, regardless of the endeavors you choose to undertake, and even if you may not be part of an educational institution, always carry with you the heart of a teacher—a heart that teaches minds, touches hearts, and transforms the lives of people you encounter every day, most especially the last, the least, and the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our society—despite your own challenges, constraints, deprivations, and limitations of resources, financially and otherwise.
We want a Barangay PLM that is founded in the spirit of community and involvement—an involved community characterized by “Malasakit sa Kapwa,” hindi lamang sa mga kasapi ng Barangay PLM kundi sa lahat ng tao, walang pinipiling kasarian, lahi, o paniniwala.

Isang pamayanan na:
May M – Maasahan (Dependable)
May A – Aba (Humble) o kababaang-loob
May L – Laging May Paggalang (Politeness and Courtesy)
May A – Angking Kasayahan (Inner Joy)
May S – Sampalataya sa Diyos (Faith in God)
May A – Adhikain (Purpose)
May K – Kaagapay (Togetherness or Community Spirit, Friendship, and Camaraderie)
May I – Inaadya ang kapwa (Protects the vulnerable and the marginalized)
May T – Tapat sa sinumpaang tungkulin (True to one’s duty)

WALANG HADLANG
Lagi kong sinasabi sa PLM:
Hindi kawalan ang kakulangan.
Hindi kabawasan ang kakapusan.
At lalong hindi hadlang ang kasalatan.

The theme of our 60th Foundation Anniversary, “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Preparing for the Future,” speaks volumes of your responsibility not only to your past and your future—those who came before and those who will come after us—but, equally important, to those who are here with you in the present, those you encounter every day as you live the purpose and meaning for which you are called and for which you are sent.
Our graduation theme, “Mga Hinubog sa Karunungan tungo sa Kaunlaran at Kadakilaan,” meaningfully sums up the true essence of today’s event.

Remember, my dear mga anak: knowledge that remains as knowledge is nothing but a wasted resource with no academic essence and moral value to speak of. PLM, as an academic institution of higher learning founded on the service of communities, remains steadfast in the fulfillment of its academic mission of transforming the lives of our less fortunate brethren and making the future better and brighter for those entrusted to its care and beyond. Your Pamantasan challenges each one of you to answer the call to mission—to be of service to your fellowmen, giving them the best of your knowledge and abilities with utmost regard to what is true, what is moral, and what is ethical.
Your future is now unfolding and evolving faster than ever before. You are now at the threshold of a new world order characterized by new alliances, norms, and standards.
Even after your graduation, remain proud members of our beloved Barangay PLM. As Haribons, you are called to be modern-day heroes, even if you are not recognized nor appreciated by the very people from whom you expected it to come.

PANANAGUTAN
You are no fence-sitters in this fast-changing, unfolding, and evolving global landscape and in the formation of a global framework that will guide upcoming generations. You make things happen and challenge the process every step of the way. Amidst the uncertain and unpredictable tomorrow, continue to live a life with purpose—a mission-driven life befitting of who you are: may karunungan, may kaunlaran, at may kadakilaan.
We take upon ourselves the difficult task of making a difference amidst confusion, chaos, and uncertainties when many would not even dare. You are key players in nation-building. Let’s build new alliances. Pursue soft power more than hard power—this is where true and meaningful change will happen.
The world has long known hard power to make things happen. A new, potent power is emerging—the soft power: non-coercive, caring, person-to-person, people-to-people—a kind of power that uses culture, principles, beliefs, and values to bring about meaningful change in society.

PAGHAMON
Be proud of your heritage. Take pride in being a graduate of this great learning institution—PLM. You are at a crucial moment in human history when new norms and standards are developing and emerging. As I have said, we are in the midst of building new partnerships and alliances among the peoples and nations of the world. As one who graduated from PLM, you cannot afford to be complacent, uninvolved, or a fence-sitter. You cannot be left behind.
You are called upon to be involved and to be key players in ensuring a better and brighter future for your family, your children, your children’s children, and those who will come after you—within the framework of the mission by which PLM was founded, and in the context of the educational philosophy that has guided and continues to guide you.
As PLM continues to be one of the forerunners in Philippine education, beyond the accolades of academic excellence, and amidst the global challenges we all face—both natural and man-made—we, together with our Mahal na Pamantasan, are once again called upon to work further toward the upliftment of the life and dignity of our brethren and to make this world a better place to be.

PAGLAYAG
Together with the bigger community of Barangay PLM, a better way for you to answer this renewed call is by finding new and innovative ways of making formally acquired knowledge responsive to the new world order. Let us assure the great people of the past—our forerunners, mentors, and tormentors—that wherever we may be, we will always make our alma mater, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, proud. PLM will always be with you in making this world a better place.
