MARINO PH | MARPOL 73/78 ( The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978) is a key international agreement aimed at minimizing marine pollution from ships. It was developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Key Points: Adopted: 1973, modified by the 1978 Protocol, hence "73/78".
Objective: Prevent pollution of the marine environment by operational or accidental discharges from ships.
Applies to: All ships flagged under countries that are parties to MARPOL.
Structure: MARPOL consists of six technical Annexes, each addressing a different type of pollution:
1. Annex I – Oil pollution
2. Annex II – Noxious liquid substances in bulk
3. Annex III – Harmful substances in packaged form
4. Annex IV – Sewage from ships
5. Annex V – Garbage from ships
6. Annex VI – Air pollution from ships
Implementation: Parties to MARPOL must enforce the regulations through national legislation. Ships are required to carry relevant certificates and are subject to inspections. please paraphrase
