A Heritage Month without Heritage 😞
We've received reports that the Dr. Manuel Zamora Mansion is being demolished with the Pablo Antonio Sr. segment now completely destroyed, AGAINST the orders from NHCP dated 2022 that the facade be spared and incorporated in the residential townhouse inside.
The Zamora-Paterno Mansions are three interconnected row-houses that have survived for centuries and featured in many old photos of Hidalgo street. The Mansion was resides and became the home laboratory of Dr. Manuel Zamora, filipino chemist who invented the Tiki-Tiki Vitamin B1 supplement to combat beri-beri before the patent was donated to Unilever. The portion of the property was also renovated by National Artist for Architecture, Pablo Antonio Sr., the main architect of the largest Art Deco complex in the country, Far Eastern University - Manila.
As such, works of National Artists are considered important cultural properties under RA10066/11961 and is under the jurisdiction of the NCCA.
When passionate Filipinos do their best to promote and protect our history, there unfortunately some who are hind sighted and focus on capital. Heritage and development should not be exclusive from one another. They coexist, the same with other countries do. Personal interests of the owners should NOT be at the cost of cherished heritage sites that will increase in value more in the decades to come than any condominium or mall they'll ever build.
Tourists visit other countries not because theyre looking for the same thing back home, but because they look for something new and memorable. What happens now that the Zamora Mansion will become but a memory? Will our dreams of a revitalized Hidalgo street, forever stay a dream?
We will be asking the of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila National Commission for Culture and the Arts , National Historical Commission of the Philippines and National Museum of the Philippines for answers as to why this was allowed despite a being recognized as a valuable heritage site.

Wala pong madadapa o magwwrestling sa hagdan na ito, pagkatapos namin siya linisin.
Dinampot na namin ang mga bato na pakalat-kalat sa lugar.

Cleanup drive at the Ocampo Pagoda
KKB along with our friends from Manileños For Heritage and volunteer residents from Quiapo, gave our famous architectural folly needed dusting and mopping to remove decades of layered dusts to reveal the true color of her machuca floor tiles and the decorative motifs from the lobby up to the tower!
The cleanup drive was held on May 09, 2026 coincidentially at the 151st birth anniversary of Gregoria de Jesus, the Lakambini of the Katipunan.
Both teams worked tirelessly and meticulously in humid weather and though we weren't able to clean everything, the energy was felt throughout and we hope continue doing more cleanups there in the future!
DISCLAIMER:
The volunteers were briefed beforehand on the rules and regulations of the Ocampo Pagoda as it is a functioning dormitory and reminders on the proper methods cleaning heritage structures. Some areas are sensitive and fragile hence needed special tools and techniques to ensure original elements are not removed during the cleanup drive.
We thank the owner of the Ocampo Pagoda Ms. Rona Abundo for her trust in us to do this cleanup and the manager Mr. Paolo Burton and Kuya Joel for providing the tools and materials plus the generous lunch afterwards.
Magkapitbahay po tayo at nasa puso namin magtulungan para sa ikagaganda at ikauunlad ng ating mahal na Quiapo
