The newest program on BA Textile Design of De La Salle-College of St Benilde presents best practices of students and alumni through outputs that create innovations inspired by tradition. Utilizing the theoretical framework of Innovation Through Tradition, students are able to come up with breakthroughs in design using traditional materials and concepts applied on textile design techniques and product creation. Furthermore, DLS-CSC as an institution is able to incubate these innovations with its interconnected system of resources, facilities, and supporting departments that refines these ideas, facilities, and supporting departments that refines these ideas, and converts them into novel marketable enterprises.

Diana Katigbak is a graduate of the De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde BA in Fashion Design and Merchandising program in 2012. In 2019, she completed her MA in Clothing Science at the Bunka Gakuen University in Tokyo, Japan. Currently, she is an Assistant Professorial Lecturer at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and the program coordinator of the Textile Design program. She also teaches textiles subjects, and technical subjects on Basic Pattern Making, Draping, and a part of the thesis advisory team for graduating students in the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program. Aside from these academic roles, she is an independent natural dye artist specializing in Indigo Dyeing, and a women’s wear designer actively collaborating with local and international designers.

In this exclusive feature, independent natural dye artist and Benilde Textile Design Program Coordinator Diana Katigbak, MA, shared her insights on the current state and future of the local textile industry. She likewise highlighted the crucial role of textile education in introducing the fundamentals to young artists and elevating the craft.

"Innovation of native natural fibers which are abundant in our country will allow breakthroughs in design that is appropriate for the needs of the Filipino lifestyle," she stated. "It may be a competitive edge we offer to the world market."

"In a cultural sense, we are able to preserve our local weaving culture by training and mentoring new designers on the proper use of indigenous weaves," she added. "It addresses the problems about cultural appropriation. We can promote the responsible use of our cultural textiles and continue the tradition."

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DoST-PTRI) and the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) recently forged an agreement to establish joint development and innovation within the local textile industry.

Through the linkage, both parties shall promote shared undertakings on textile research and technology to develop processes, systems and products toward creative, inclusive and sustainable expansion.

The agency and institution shall initiate and implement cooperation on training, materials and requirements relevant to the shared laboratory facilities. They will likewise engage in the capacity building of its human resources and stakeholders through adjunct academic engagements. They will also provide on-the-job training and fellowships, and offer special or masterclasses on specific topics in textile design and other domains or modalities.

Fashion designer Christine Cheryl Benet reveals how this year's trends champion innovation and sustainability.

“Brands are moving towards more conscious methods of materiality,” she explains. “There has been a heightened appreciation of handicrafts, arts, and do-it-yourself (DIY).”

Benilde Textile Design Program Coordinator and independent natural dye artist Diana Katigbak, who specializes in indigo dyeing, likewise notes how today's consumers are more aware of the impact of textile waste on society and climate.

“They demand more transparency from the retailers they buy from,” she adds. “There is a thrust for change in business practices and a need for textile material innovation.”

Filipino creatives explore natural dye process, local textiles in art workshop 18/05/2024

Colors of Nature, an art workshop which gathered Filipino creatives to experiment with diverse techniques in the natural dyeing process and local textiles, aims to promote sustainable practices in the industry.

It tapped several Senior High School (SHS) students from various institutions in the Philippines to expand their cultural understanding on the utilization of natural dyes, organic resources, and local textiles in their own designs.

The initiative was organized by the Benilde Textile Design in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute DOST - PTRI.

“The Colors of Nature aimed to give new learnings to the youth based on science and research, which makes a good foundation for exploring the different application possibilities for natural dye sources,” Benilde Textile Design Program Coordinator Diana Jean Katigbak shared.

LOOK: The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) and the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 6, 2024, at the Design + Arts Campus of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Malate, Manila.

This MOU aims to establish and foster technical cooperation on textile and allied textile research, development and innovation, instruction, and extension and technology transfer between the DOST-PTRI and DLS-CSB. It promotes cooperation, collaboration, and joint undertakings among researchers and research groups of both parties.

The MOU signing was attended by the representatives from DOST-PTRI Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr., Director IV, Zailla F. Payag, Supervising Science Research Specialist and representatives from DLS-CSB Mr. Benhur A. Ong, Chancellor, Angelo Marco U. Lacson, Vice Chancellor for Academics, AR. Harvey A. Vasquez, SED Dean, and Ms. Diana Jean U. Katigbak, Program Coordinator of Textile Design Program.

This partnership establishes the Textile Academy, a Hub for textile knowledge exchange. The academy aims to empower local talents through skills training programs, workshops, research initiatives, and professional development, fostering expertise in textile technology, design, and sustainable practices.

Furthermore, this collaboration integrates seamlessly with DLS-CSB's School of Environment and Design, reinforcing the institution's dedication to textile education and design development. Together, DOST-PTRI and DLS-CSB envision cultivating a pool of textile scientists, engineers, and technicians, contributing to the growth of the Philippine textile sector.
