SBC wins 13th Inter-School Pre-Medicine quiz show
The San Beda College - College of Nursing delegates (SBC-CON) emerged as champions in the recently concluded 13th Inter-School Pre-Medicine quiz show sponsored by the Brotherhood of Medical Scholars held at Justo Albert auditorium, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila last February 11.
The said event is in line with the celebration of the 24th founding anniversary of the Brotherhood of Medical Scholars, the oldest, and the only male organization of PLM - College of Medicine, tagged with the theme “BMS: 24 Years of a United Brotherhood”. The organization aims to intensify their projects in maintaining excellence in academics, community service and leadership.
The champions were composed of senior nursing students Joseph Angelo Rayo, Dranreb Barrios Pasion and Marisolle Grace Gregorio together with their coach Dr. Janice Ann Lupiba-Paras and SBC-CON faculty Rodeo R. Aguilar RN and Pocholo R. Autencio PTRP, MBA, RN, besting 38 other competing teams from different colleges and universities.
The set of judges of the competition were Dr. Michael B. Ples - Biology, Ms. Regina C. So, Ph. D - Chemistry, Dr. Leslie M. Reyes, FPOA, FPCS - Human Anatomy, Dr. Larry S. King, DPBA - Human Physiology and Dr. Anchela Uy-Biag, MBA - Medical Trivia. Moreover, the set of questions used in the competition were from distinguished doctors and professors in top universities and colleges.
In the elimination round, 30 questions were given to the contestants and were divided into two parts with 15 questions each. The University of Santo Tomas, College of Nursing (UST-CON) and De La Salle University-Manila, College of Science (DLSU) tied with 12 points capturing the top spot during the first half of elimination while San Beda College (SBC) got 9 points and was in neck to neck with other schools. However, SBC scored 11 points that made them the top scorer during the second half.
After the elimination, the scores were tallied and the list of top 5 teams was announced. University of Santo Tomas - College of Nursing (22 points), De La Salle University, Dasmariñas- College of Science (22 points), Philippine Normal University- College of Science (21 points), San Beda College - College of Nursing (20 points) and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila - College of Nursing (20 points) emerged to compete in the final round.
In the final round, 20 questions were given where 17 items are multiple-choice type (1 point per correct answer) and the remaining three items were identification-type (2 points per correct answer). Also, the rule “right minus wrong” was implemented, giving the competition a heated finale. But if no answers were given, there will be no deduction from the contestants’ points.
San Beda College-College of Nursing was in the lead in the middle of the said round. However, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and De La Salle University - Dasmarinas managed to score 5 points after series of questions making the final round, a triple tie. A 3-item clincher round was held and SBC-CON got two questions correctly which concluded the competition and emerged as the winner while, PLM and DLSU-D landed as the 1st and 2nd runner up, respectively. The champions were awarded with cash prizes, medals, certificates and the much-coveted, Perpetual trophy.
“This is the first time that representatives from a college of nursing won the Perpetual trophy since the quiz show was founded. Also, this is the first time we (SBC-CON) joined a major competition. I believe that these set of students both have the EQ and IQ to perform well”, said Dean Tessie Da Jose, RN, MAN, EdD San Beda College, College of Nursing.
