In July 2023, it was disclosed that the Philippines has a national outstanding debt amounting to PHP 14 trillion. This debt burden was further broken down to reveal that, on average, each Filipino carried a debt of PHP 125,588. When considered at the family level, the debt per family was even higher, reaching PHP 534,021. These figures were based on the country's total population of 112.2 million.

In the data released by the Bureau of Treasury in comparison to earlier administrations, the Marcos administration had the largest average monthly rise in outstanding debt. 💸📈

During the Marcos Regime, the Philippines' debt was $600 million and increased to $26 billion by 1986. Marcos instituted automatic debt service payments before any other government spending in 1977, making the Philippines the only country with such a law. He borrowed considerably from foreign sources in the 1970s but failed to repay them in the 1980s. The Marcos administration's significant reliance on foreign loans has impacted the Philippines' economic fall. He attempted to conceal the financial problem by inflating foreign reserve figures. The economy crumbled as GDP growth slowed, export prices fell, salaries were reduced, and unemployment rose.

In 1983, the Philippine debt was 91 percent of GNP and 509 percent of export revenues. The loan got more expensive as creditors upped and floated interest rates. 🌐💸

The Philippine national debt stands at a whopping PHP14.15 trillion as of June 2023, comprising 58.3% of the GDP. With PHP4.45 trillion from external sources and PHP9.70 trillion domestically, it's a diverse funding landscape. The projected gross external debt for 2021-2022 is $111.3 billion (27.5% of GDP). In 2020, the debt hit its peak at PHP12.68 trillion, and from Jan to Oct 2023, debt principal payments surged by 59% to PHP 1.47 trillion, signifying a significant financial commitment.

In the National Government Debt of the Bureau of Treasury, it is interesting that the Philippine debt reached a record high of PHP12.68 trillion in 2020, suggesting a significant increase. Furthermore, from January to October 2023, debt principal payments increased by 59%, totaling PHP1.47 trillion.
