𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | Women journalists took center stage for this month's PUP Journalism Guild Peryodistalk, titled “𝐁𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐳𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦,” held on April 22, 2026, at the College of Communication Audio-Visual Room.

The event explored the evolving role of journalism through female perspectives, featuring veteran journalists Ms. Inday Espina-Varona and Ms. Martha Teodoro.

Award-winning journalist 𝐌𝐬. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐄𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐚-𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚 graced the event with a powerful discussion on the experiences of Filipino women journalists. She shared her journey during the Martial Law regime, shedding light on the challenges she faced and emphasizing the continuing threats encountered by women in the field today.

Another insightful discussion was delivered by 𝐌𝐬. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐚 𝐓𝐞𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐨, who took the stage with her talk titled, “Navigating Gendered Risk: Combating Disinformation and Ensuring Women’s Safety in the Media.” She highlighted the vital role of media while sharing her own experiences, emphasizing how safety training can help protect journalists from evolving risks.

The event concluded meaningfully, serving as a renewed call to recognize the role and significance of female journalists in the industry. Though the event had been postponed, it ultimately allowed for a more impactful gathering—one that inspired future truth-tellers to continue the pursuit of responsible journalism.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 | Vice Chairperson of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) - Metro Manila Ms. Martha Teodoro takes the center stage for a discussion titled, "Navigating Gendered Risk: Combating Disinformation and Ensuring Women's Safety in the Media."

Teodoro shared the importance of media safety, sharing her own experience in the field. She emphasized that media safety training would protect journalists during high-risk coverages.

Furthermore, she underscored the number of cases on media attacks recorded under the regime of Marcos Jr., with harassment as the most used form of intimidation against media workers.

𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗢𝗪 | Esteemed veteran and award-winning journalist Ms. Inday Espina-Varona graces the event with a discussion on the experiences of Filipino women journalists.

Varona shared her experiences as a women journalist from the Martial Law regime until becoming part of both Rappler and ABS-CBN's Bayan Mo, Ipatrol Mo.

For Varona, women journalists in the country continue to face threats, especially during the Marcos-Duterte conflict, and we should expect that the journalism field will become "rock and roll" in the future.

𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗢𝗪 | PUP Journalism Guild kicks off this month’s PeryodisTalks with the theme “𝐁𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐳𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦,” to discuss how female perspectives continuously transform journalism in modern era.

The program will feature veteran journalists Martha Teodoro and Inday Espina-Varona, who will discuss how the female perspective continues to influence and transform modern media, including the hurdles and setbacks faced by women journalists.

The event was originally set to take on March; however, due to scheduling conflict, the program was moved to April.

Our first speaker, 𝐌𝐬. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐚 𝐀. 𝐓𝐞𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐨 has been serving the field with a long list of experience. She is currently a part-time Reporter for Bulatlat, and a part-time Correspondent for Nueva Ecija TV 28. She has also served as the Media and Marketing Manager for International Care Ministries.

Furthermore, the event will also be graced by the presence of 𝐌𝐫𝐬. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐄𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐚-𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚, an award-winning journalist and Rappler’s former Head of regions. Renowned for her dedication to upholding press freedom, citizen engagement, and youth empowerment, she once led ABS-CBN’s Bayan Mo iPatrol Mo. Moreover, she also had a stint as the country’s head for Change.org.

Their insights will resonate with every aspiring journalist, allowing us to step into a space where powerful stories, lived experiences, and fearless truth-telling take the stage.
