Participants from the American Concrete Institute Philippines โ€“ Technological University of the Philippines Manila Student Chapter (ACIP TUPM) won the ACI Philippines Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites Competition 2025, held on December 7, 2025 at UP Diliman.

This competition is newly introduced in the country where six teams from different universities showcased their engineering skills as they designed, constructed, and tested concrete structures reinforced with FRP bars to achieve the lowest costโ€“load ratio based on ACI CODE 440.11โ€“22 design standards.

The TUP Manila delegates consisted of BS Civil Engineering students Jerico Ceniza, KC Mae Idos, and Ianna Marie Villaruel from the third year level, and Dexter Jay Aballe, Mary Germeinne Abeleda, Nick Andrew Bohol, Pamela Lumanog, and Leslie Umali from the fourth year level. They were mentored by Engr. Romie Zapanta, Engr. Teodimer II Escuro, and Engr. Jan Aivan Rodrigueza.

According to the team, the most challenging part of their preparation was managing conflicting schedules, working with limited tools, and understanding the technical requirements of FRP systems. Competing at UP Diliman placed them among strong contenders nationwide. โ€œQue sera sera โ€” whatever will be, will be,โ€ the team remarked, emphasizing how they focused on their teamwork and trust in one another.

Additionally, they also expressed gratitude to their coaches for providing technical guidance and moral support. While the team took initiative in refining their design, the coaches ensured that the project remained aligned with competition standards and progressed smoothly from planning to implementation.

Following their championship, the team earned the right to represent the Philippines at the ACI International FRP Composites Competition in Rosemont/Chicago, Illinois on March 29, 2026.
This will be the first time that the civil engineering department will send representatives to compete in the international scene.

Currently, only two participants are confirmed to travel, and the team is seeking sponsors to help additional members join the international competition.
