10 Classroom Management that Works
Adding these strategies to your lesson plan can help your students have a better time in class and a better place to learn. Tell your students about these strategies and keep reminding them throughout the school year.
1. Establish clear expectations and rules: Begin by setting up clear expectations and rules for behavior in the classroom. This can include rules for talking, walking, using technology, and interacting with others. These expectations should be discussed with students, and they should be held accountable for following them.
Example instruction sentence:
"Today, we will be discussing our expectations for behavior in the classroom. "Please listen carefully and be prepared to share your ideas."
2. Use positive reinforcement: Reward positive behavior with praise, stickers, or other incentives. This encourages students to repeat good behavior and improves the classroom environment.
Example instruction sentence: "Great job, Richard! "You followed our classroom rules and earned a sticker for your behavior chart."
3. Provide structure and routine:
Students thrive on routine and structure. Plan your lessons in a predictable format, and use a consistent activity schedule.
Example of an instruction: "We will start our lesson with a brief review of yesterday's material, then move on to a group activity and then independent work time."
4. Use visual aids:
Visual aids such as posters, diagrams, and graphic organizers can help students stay focused and engaged in the lesson. Example instruction sentence: "Let's look at this graphic organizer together." "Can anyone tell me what it means?"
5. Incorporate movement:
Movement can help break up long periods of sitting and improve students' focus and attention. Plan for brief activity breaks during lessons, such as stretching or quick physical exercises.
Example instruction sentence: "We have been sitting for a while, so let's all stand up and do some quick stretches before we move on to our next activity."
6. Encourage active participation.
When students participate in the lesson, they are more interested and involved. Plan for opportunities for students to ask questions, share ideas, and work collaboratively.
Example instruction sentence: "Now it's your turn to share your ideas with a partner." Take turns talking about what you have learned so far."
7. Use technology:
Incorporate interactive whiteboards, tablets, or online resources to enhance your lessons.
Example instruction sentence: "We will be using the smartphones today to complete a research activity on the topic we have been studying."
8. Maintain a positive classroom culture: Model positivity, respect, and kindness, and foster a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.
Example instruction sentence: "In our classroom, we treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter our differences."
9. Use humor: Humor can help create a relaxed and positive learning environment. Plan for opportunities to use humor in your lessons, such as telling a joke or sharing a funny anecdote.
Example instruction sentence: "Now, let's take a quick break for a joke." Why did the tomato turn red? "Because it saw the salad dressing!"
10. Build relationships:
Students are more engaged and invested in the lesson when they feel connected to their teacher and peers. Take time to get to know your students and foster positive relationships with them.
Example instruction sentence: "Let's all take a moment to introduce ourselves and share something we are looking forward to this school year."
