The Ateneo de Manila University’s (ADMU) Research on Optical Science, Engineering, and Systems (ROSES) Laboratory will be hosting Dr. Lean Karlo S. Tolentino's lecture entitled "Computing-in-Memory Technologies Using Nanoscale Transistor and Photonic Implementations." This will be held tomorrow, May 25, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NN.
Abstract:
A new Computational-In-Memory (CIM) architecture, implemented using a 40-nm CMOS process, is introduced to address the von Neumann bottleneck present in current computer architectures. This bottleneck restricts the computational efficiency of artificial intelligence systems. The novel architecture supports Boolean logic operations, arithmetic addition, and multiplication of signed numbers. Built-in self-test (BIST) modes include normal and retention operations. The utilization of a 2T-Switch enhances SRAM array efficiency by conserving chip space. A disturb-free 7T 1-kb SRAM, employing full-swing gate diffusion input (FS-GDI) technology, powers the RCAM unit, ensuring optimal voltage swing, minimal power consumption, and compact area utilization. Auto-Switching Write Back Circuits are utilized to aid memory address retrieval. The current challenge in CIM systems lies in improving and achieving a higher energy efficiency, measured in peta operations per second per watt (POPS/W), especially as MOS transistors continue to shrink. There is uncertainty regarding the feasibility of transistors reaching sizes as small as 1 nanometer. Additionally, the exploration of alternative technologies such as photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is gaining momentum due to the inherent advantages of light-based processing, which offers higher speeds compared to traditional electronic circuits. The potential for photonic neural networks further expands the capabilities of CIM systems, utilizing light speed to enhance computational abilities. However, substantial research and development efforts are necessary to fully realize the potential of these emerging technologies in CIM.
