๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐Š: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) warmly welcomed the Magsaysay Training Center African Cadets and training staff aboard BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) at Port Area, Manila, today, April 26, 2026.

During the ship tour and visit, the cadets were given the opportunity to explore various facets of maritime operations, observe modern technology and equipment, and learn about the different departments and functions of PCG vessels, including navigation, engineering, and safety protocols.

The visit aimed to provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of the maritime profession. By witnessing the PCGโ€™s daily operations firsthand, they gained valuable insights into the realities and responsibilities of a career at sea.

This activity reflects the PCGโ€™s continued commitment to strengthening partnerships with maritime training institutions and nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals.

As part of his participation at the SAFETY4SEA Forum held at the Sheraton Manila Hotel on 16 April 2026, MLRI Business Development Manager C/E Marl Jeffone Reyes delivered a presentation on Human Factors in the New Maritime Landscape.

In this featured video, he concludes his talk with a personal reflectionโ€”revisiting his journey as a 20-year-old engine cadet. Through this narrative, he highlights how digitalization and decarbonization are shaping the maritime industry, while its main purpose remains the same: safe, efficient, and timely delivery of cargo.

He also emphasizes the importance of continuous learning as seafarers adapt to emerging technologies and evolving industry requirements under IMO initiatives.

Speaking at the SAFETY4SEA Forum 2026, Magsaysay Learning Resources, Inc. (MLRI) President Dr. Alex M. Enriquez emphasized that the maritime sector is not facing a shortage of talent or graduates, citing strong institutional support across maritime schools, training institutions, and assessment centers.

He stressed that the issue is not supply, but what happens between graduation and leadership readinessโ€”the real bottleneck is structured training. Framing it as a conversion challenge, he noted that the focus should not be on how many seafarers are produced, but how many become truly ready.

He concluded by calling for structured training that integrates technical excellence with human competence to bridge the gap and ensure a future-ready maritime workforce.

The panel also included Elburg Shipmanagement Philippines Inc. Data Management Manager Antonio Vittorio Terrei, who raised concerns on workforce aging, officer shortages, and the need for structured career development pathways, including talent development programs. He was joined by Mintra Senior Vice President Capt. Sartaj Gill and The Hood Platform Founder and Managing Director Josephine Le, who highlighted the importance of reskilling, upskilling, and strengthening soft skills to address future maritime workforce demands.

MLRI Business Development Manager C/E Marl Jeffone Reyes at the SAFETY4SEA Forum 2026, sharing insights on how digitalization is reshaping shipboard operations and reinforcing the need for continuous learning in a maritime environment that is increasingly technology-driven and data-dependent.

Magsaysay participated as a Gold Sponsor at the 5th SAFETY4SEA Manila Forum held on 16 April 2026 at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, joining global maritime stakeholders in discussions on seafarer welfare, safety, and industry transformation.

Representing Magsaysay Learning Resources, Inc. (MLRI), Business Development Manager C/E Marl Jeffone Reyes joined Panel 1, contributing insights on how the growing use of automation, digital tools, and new maritime technologies is changing shipboard work and placing greater importance on human judgment, coordination, and decision-making at sea.

MLRI President Dr. Alex M. Enriquez also joined the forum, emphasizing the shift needed in maritime educationโ€”from producing technically skilled graduates to developing well-rounded professionals who are digitally capable, adaptable, and continuously learning.

In Panel 5, Seafarersโ€™ Voice: Life, Work & Expectations at Sea, firsthand perspectives on life onboard were shared. Representing Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, Third Officer Jender Dave Degamo and Captain Erick John Roluna gave an honest look into life at sea, touching on both the challenges crews face and the drive that keeps them going.
