The National Historical Commission of the Philippines joins the Filipino Roman Catholic faithful in their observance of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception today, 8 December 2025.

By virtue of Republic Act No. 10966, December 8 of every year is declared as a special non-working holiday nationwide in recognition of the deep spiritual and historical value of the Solemnity has for Filipino Roman Catholics since the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Conception, has been the principal patroness of the Philippines since the 16th Century.

The er****on of the Archdiocese of Manila, then a suffragan diocese to the Archdiocese of Mexico, established the Manila Cathedral under the invocation of the Immaculate Conception in 1578. In 1760, Pope Clement XIII declared the Immaculate Conception as patroness of Spain and the Indies, which includes its Pacific colonies such as the Philippines. On 12 September 1942, Pope Pius XII declared Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, as the principal patroness of the Philippines, in view of declarations by the bishops of the Philippines.

Apart from the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Intramuros, Manila, a number of the country's episcopal sees were established under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, including the Archdioceses of Cebu, Nueva Segovia, and Caceres (all erected in 1595 by Pope Clement VIII.) Various historic churches, such as the Guiuan Church, in Eastern Samar (a National Cultural Treasure) and Oslob Church in Cebu (also a National Cultural Treasure) are likewise dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
