𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗦
𝑤𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑛 𝑏𝑦: 𝑃𝑟𝑦𝑚 𝐹𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑎
𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑛 𝑏𝑦: 𝐽𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑧𝑎𝑚

A new storm, a new name — and as our country lies in the crosshairs of the Pacific Typhoon Belt that transforms our streets into rivers and cities into traps — the real disaster is not what falls from the sky, but the false sense of security we've been allowed to hold onto. Despite billions allocated for drainage lines and flood-control master plans, our infrastructure continues to be outpaced by the realities of our changing climate, leaving our communities vulnerable.

The aftermath of a disaster in the Philippines has never been purely meteorological — it is structural. This disaster is a never-ending cycle where the heaviest price is paid by the most vulnerable, leaving countless families without a safe place to call home. Whilst families lost in the storm are shivering, the absence of long-term structural accountability ensures that temporary fixes continue to overshadow the urgent need for permanent, resilient safety.

The recent extreme weather conditions felt mostly by the people in Luzon, led to several fatalities with SunStar Philippines reporting at least six lives lost to sudden floods and landslides. For many families having to evacuate and be rescued, this disaster brought a painful and far too familiar reality: flooded streets, submerged homes, and the struggle just to stay alive. As the storms grow louder and more unpredictable with each passing time, our safety net is being tested to its breaking point — revealing that we aren’t built to bear the realities of our climate.

While many suffer from the effects of extreme rain and monsoon downpours, our generation continues to advocate for structural accountability — yet as an article from The Philippine Star notes, praise for the ‘resilient Filipino’ often acts as a convenient narrative that overshadows the urgent need for proactive solutions. We should refuse to accept a culture of endurance that only serves as an excuse for inadequate infrastructure, because our capacity to survive should never be used to mask the critical gap between what is promised and what is actually delivered.

As future civil engineers who study the very structure of the buildings we use, we refuse to watch the science of safe and sturdy nation-building come crashing down beneath the weight of systemic neglect. The laws of physics dictate that concrete does not wash away by accident, nor do drainage systems fail because the clouds start to cry. They fail because critical engineering standards are compromised, and proactive urban planning is treated as an afterthought. Armed with our integrity, we stand firm, turning our expertise into a sword that demands accountability and breaks this endless cycle.

We live in a reality where we are given a fate that is forced to be accepted, and that acceptance is weaponized against us, turning our quiet endurance into a safety pass for a flawed system rather than a catalyst for a safer tomorrow. While the rage of the Filipino people is burning, set ablaze in our communities — it is continuously extinguished by a pattern of temporary fixes that have yet to catch up with our genuine public safety needs.

To simply survive, we ought to go through what seems to be hell — and until we continue to demand strict structural accountability, the resources meant to protect our communities must be redirected from reactive, short-term fixes toward lasting solutions. If we don’t start treating the lack of proper infrastructure with the urgency it truly demands, our cities will forever remain sinking.
