DOST-CBPSME Scholar Earns PhD, Bags Outstanding Dissertation Award at De La Salle University
Dr. Joana De Guzman Quinto has completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education, Major in Mathematics, at De La Salle University, graduating on June 19, 2026 — and capping off her doctoral journey with the university's Outstanding Dissertation Award.
The recognition marks the culmination of a rare, fully vertically articulated path through mathematics education — one that saw Dr. Quinto supported by the Department of Science and Technology's Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education (DOST-CBPSME) scholarship from her undergraduate studies at Central Luzon State University all the way through to her doctorate at De La Salle University.
Dr. Quinto began her academic journey at Central Luzon State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in Mathematics, before pursuing her Master of Science in Mathematics Education at the same university. She then carried that same scholarship support into her doctoral studies, completing her Ph.D. in Science Education, Major in Mathematics, at De La Salle University.
This undergraduate-to-doctorate continuity under a single scholarship program is uncommon, and it reflects a sustained, vertically articulated pipeline in mathematics education — one that took Dr. Quinto from a pre-service teacher-in-training to a mathematics education scholar producing doctoral-level research recognized as outstanding by her own institution.
Her award-winning dissertation, titled *"AI-Supported Inquiry-Based Proof Learning in FlexTEL (Flexible Technology Enhanced Learning) Environments: A Framework for Integrating AI in Mathematics Proofs,"* explores how artificial intelligence can be integrated into inquiry-based approaches to teaching mathematical proof within flexible, technology-enhanced learning environments — positioning her work at the intersection of mathematics education and emerging educational technology.
Her achievement highlights both her individual dedication and the value of continuous government investment in producing highly trained mathematics educators for the Philippines, from classroom teaching credentials to advanced research capacity.
Congratulations Dr. Quinto! Your College of Education family is extremely proud of you.

PUP College of Education Joins 2026 Taiwan Philippines Senior High School Exchange Program
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Education participated in the 2026 Taiwan Philippines Senior High School Exchange Roundtable and Academic Visit Program held in Taiwan from July 15 to 18, 2026, strengthening academic relations between Philippine and Taiwanese educational institutions.
Representing PUP were Assoc. Prof. Gary Antonio C. Lirio, faculty member of the Department of Secondary Education and Coordinator of the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Science program, and Assoc. Prof. Christine A. Del Rosario, faculty member of the College of Education and Principal of the PUP Laboratory High School.
The four day academic visit included institutional engagements at Taipei Municipal Zhongzheng Senior High School, the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Academia Sinica, and National Sun Yat sen University. The delegates also attended cultural activities at the National Palace Museum and in Kaohsiung.
The Taiwan Philippines Senior High School Exchange Roundtable was conducted on July 17 at National Sun Yat sen University. The program covered the sharing of school exchange practices, the introduction and matching of participating Philippine and Taiwanese institutions, discussions on possible cooperation among secondary schools and universities, and the final presentation of the Science and Innovation Camp. The event was organized by the Philippine Taiwan Education Center and National Sun Yat sen University, with guidance from the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines.
The Philippine delegation included representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, the Philippine Science High School System and its regional campuses, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, FEU Alabang, the University of Baguio Science High School, the University of the East, and other educational institutions.
PUP’s participation supports its vision of becoming a leading comprehensive polytechnic university in Asia and its mission of advancing inclusive, equitable, and globally relevant polytechnic education toward national development. The academic visit also supports the University’s goals for relevant instruction, faculty development, student learning, and international academic cooperation.
The meetings may lead to joint academic programs, school partnerships, teacher and student exchanges, collaborative research, science education activities, and the sharing of practices in curriculum, educational technology, school leadership, and student development. Such cooperation can provide Philippine educators with reference points for improving science teaching, senior high school programs, and international learning opportunities while allowing partner institutions in Taiwan to develop sustained engagement with Philippine schools and universities.
The program contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education by supporting access to relevant and internationally informed learning experiences. It also advances Sustainable Development Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals through cooperation among government agencies, schools, universities, and international education partners.
