The MusikaPilipinas team will be sharing the research findings as well for the public on July 25th 2023 from 2 - 5 pm, and we are warmly inviting you to its livestream.
From September 2021 to June 2022, MusikaPilipinas conducted a research project that produced a comprehensive economic baseline of the country’s music industry and a profile of its stakeholders. The results were presented at the House of Representatives last June 8, 2023.
The MusikaPilipinas Project is funded by the DOST-NRCP and implemented by the UST Research Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities (UST RCCAH). It serves as a seminal research study in the field of Philippine music industry analysis.
It is the team’s ultimate goal to influence the creation and implementation of government policies that will foster the growth of the music industry and assure its sustainability for future generations. We are deeply grateful for your support and we hope to see you at our livestream!
Discover the captivating legacy of Maggie Calloway, the acclaimed "Star of Aggregation." Born in 1910 in Manila, this extraordinary Filipina and Black American bodabil performer enchanted audiences in Manila and Singapore with her unique talent. From the 1920s to the 1940s, she astounded both as a soloist and in chorus formations alongside other Filipino bodabil stars.
Join us for an engaging discussion with Ms. Jewel Pereyra, a Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University's American Studies program. Ms. Pereyra will explore Calloway's transcultural dance styles, vocal experiments, and fashion choices, shedding light on how she redefined concepts of Filipina and Black Amerasian femininities. Through this analysis, we gain a fresh perspective on the dynamic relationship between U.S. and European empires in Asia and the Pacific.
Ms. Pereyra's dissertation, "Afro-Filipina Aesthetics: Transnational Sound Cultures and Dance Performances, 1898-1978," delves into the rich tapestry of poetic, theatrical, and musical performances that emerged from encounters between Filipina and Black women performers.
Don't miss this opportunity to unravel the story of the remarkable Maggie Calloway and celebrate her lasting influence on the world of performance. Join us for this compelling talk with Ms. Jewel Pereyra on May 30, 2023 (Tuesday) from 10 AM to 12 PM at the UST Central Laboratory Auditorium, 8/F Central Laboratory Building.
For centuries, people have been fascinated by the idea that the movement of the planets and stars could create a celestial music that is beyond our human senses. In this talk, Dr. David Kendall, author of the book 'Imagining the Music of the Spheres', brings to the fore various systematic musical ecologies of the cosmos. He focuses on the theoretical, theological, philosophical, physical, and mathematical concepts of a cosmic musical order and explores how these concepts have been used to fit within different worldviews. Dr. Kendall also discusses the imaginations of theologians, theorists, writers of hymns, and authors of fictional literature, including Dante, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien.
Join us in this fascinating session and engage in a stimulating discussion with Dr. David Kendall on May 4, 2023 (Thursday) at 2 PM at the UST Central Laboratory Auditorium, 8/F Central Laboratory Building.

What is MusikaPilipinas?
MusikaPilipinas is a government-funded research project aimed at forming a foundational understanding of the Philippine music industry, recently launched an online survey among music practitioners in the country. MusikaPilipinas is hopeful that by getting as many responses as possible from different individuals working in the local industry or whose work is related to music, the project will get a better idea of what the industry needs and how to support its rise to become a major economic contributor.
It is no secret that the Philippines is rife with musically talented people. Yet despite this, the industry is often overlooked during crucial discussions and future planning by the government as to which industries can be improved to help develop the country’s economy.
MusikaPilipinas is designed to fill this gap. This research project was started in support of the creative industries bill in the Philippine Congress filed by Cong. Christopher “Toff” de Venecia. Its primary purpose is to take a very close look at the local music industry and to find out what would help it grow to be at par with foreign counterparts and how to protect it from foreign competition.
MusikaPilipinas is looking for Filipinos working in the industry to answer the survey. MusikaPilipinas wants to know about the experiences of people in the industry, the challenges they face, and how they should be supported by the government.

When you let a woman lead, opportunities are limitless!
In today's 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, we have 𝗔𝗿. 𝗖𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗦. 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘃𝗮, 𝗨𝗔𝗣. She is an Environmental Planner, Academic Researcher, and Associate Member of the National Research Council of the Philippines under DOST. In her interview, she pinpoints how we are now becoming more accepting of women's strengths in our field of work.
Read more of her statement below:
──────────────────────
What are the challenges you faced in a male-dominated career like architecture? What advice can you give to women who experience these situations?
Today is the perfect time to be a woman where more doors are open and people have accepted the sensitivities and strengths of womanhood. The entire planet is referred to as mother earth, because of the softness, bountiful and generous resources a mother is willing to give her children. Architecture cannot exist without women. The practice today calls for inclusive, smart and nature based solutions that every women is programmed for.
Opportunities are limitless for everyone. Assert your strengths. Possibilities are plentiful and you can create your own niche in the field.
What improvements do you want to see in the working environment of architecture for women?
In the work place, more specifically in construction sites, I hope there will be room for inclusiveness, and gender and development. Specifically temporary facilities for women and children in the offices, construction sites and surroundings, such as well-ventilated spaces, safety in all areas, provision of maintained rest rooms. Which are really very basic but most often overlooked.
