The Anda Monument, seen here illuminated at night, recently underwent a thorough cleaning to restore its beauty. Its dancing color fountain adds a vibrant touch to this historic landmark.

Greeting guests and passersby at the boundary between Intramuros and the Port Area in Manila, the monument honors Simón de Anda y Salazar, Governor-General of the Philippines from 1770 to 1776. Anda is best remembered for leading the Spanish and local resistance against the British invasion of Luzon from 1762 to 1764.

Visit Intramuros after dark and experience the Walled City’s charm in a whole new light.

Wishing everyone a wonderful evening and a vibrant week ahead!

On this day in 1595, the Diocese of Manila was elevated to the rank of an Archdiocese by Pope Clement VIII, with three newly created suffragan dioceses: Nueva Caceres, Nueva Segovia, and Cebu.

Manila had originally been established as a suffragan diocese of Mexico on 6 February 1579, by Pope Gregory XIII through the Apostolic Constitution 𝘐𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘰, following the first wave of missionary efforts in the Philippines. The Manila Cathedral—then dedicated to La Purísima Inmaculada Concepción—became the seat of the diocese and later the archdiocese.

With the creation of the new dioceses in 1595, the Archdiocese of Manila’s jurisdiction was narrowed to the city itself and ten surrounding civil provinces: Tondo, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Bataan, Zambales, and Mindoro, along with the small island of Corregidor.
