In a new study published in Science, researchers observed that mice attempt to revive unconscious companions, mirroring human emergency responses. When a drugged mouse became unresponsive, its peer engaged in sniffing, grooming, and even aggressive first aid tactics like tongue-pulling to clear airways.

Scientists from the University of Southern California noted that this is the first recorded instance of animal emergency-like responses. Experiments showed that mice were more likely to help familiar companions, with their actions ceasing once the unconscious mouse regained activity.

The behaviour was linked to the brain’s paraventricular nucleus, where neurons produce oxytocin—a hormone associated with empathy-like responses. This discovery sheds new light on social bonding and emergency instincts in animals.
